Every year on this day I pull up some original news broadcast from the morning of 9/11 and just sit in it for a bit. It still feels as raw as it does 25 years ago, but now it has all the layers of anger from what has followed in the 25 years after. Also, I miss Peter Jennings.

It took a long time for my grandparents to accept my coming out, but over time, they embraced that, became Obama volunteers, and even began chiding their own conservative neighbors for anti-abortion stances. I truly credit Gloria's panel discussion with getting that all started.

Gloria Steinem spoke at my college family weekend back in 2000. My Methodist, conservative Midwestern grandparents attended that weekend, and we went to her panel. I have never before seen my grandfather so *engaged* by a speaker. He was transfixed. Totally opened up his perspective on the world.
