Bobtail and Bottletail Squids (order Sepiolida) are a small and adorable group of cephalopods. Most bobtail squid (family Sepiolidae) species are bioluminescent, which they used to hide their silhouette at night; no bottletail squid species (family Sepiadariidae) is bioluminescent.
A Southern Bottletail Squid (Sepiadarium austrinum) sitting on white sand. Its arms are close to its body and are sweeping to either side. Its leftmost arm is raised slightly. It has some sand on top of its head and mantle. The bottletail squid is a vibrant orange colour, except for some white above its eyes.A Berry's Bobtail Squid (Euprymna berryi) sitting on a sandy seafloor. The bobtail squid is so small that the grains of sand are clearly visible. The bobtail squid has its arms tucked back so there are below its head and part of its mantle. The back end of the mantle is resting on the ground. The bobtail squid is a beautiful mix of iridescent yellow, green cyan and blue, with a bunch of black and dark brown chromatophores covering its body like spots. The background is out of focus and blurry.A Striped Pyjama Bottletail Squid (Sepioloidea lineolata) sitting on the sand. It is white with black to dark brown lengthwise stripes and it has some sand on its head, right above its eyes. The top of its eye is orange.A close up of a Stubby Bobtail Squid (Rossia pacifica) sitting on the sandy sea floor, facing the camera. It is quite close so it looks like you are lying down next to the bobtail squid and it is looking into your eyes with its horizontal pupils.. Its mantle is behind it and its are going down and mostly hidden. The bobtail squid is covered in red chromatophores and has some blue and green chromatophores, especially round the eyes. The sand is beige.

This is what the surface of Venus looks like. (Sort of.)
A barren plain, filled with flat rocks, pebbles, and sand. The sky is a yellow colour; the ground fades with distance from the camera, which is mounted on a lander (the base of which is visible at the bottom).

Something wonderful for the weekend! About 40,000 years ago, during the #IceAge, an ancient artist skilfully sculpted this tiny head of a cave lion from mammoth ivory. It is one of the World’s oldest known works of figurative art. 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows the left side profile of a head of a cave lion made of mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago (Aurignacian culture). The ivory would originally have been white in colour but is now a light creamy brown with a surface sheen, and darker patches caused by time spent buried in the ground. Carved details include mouth, nose, eyes, and ears. There is cross hatching behind the ears to indicate the mane. It measures 2.95 cm in length x 2.11 cm. On display landesmuseum, Stuttgart

Artist’s painting of an acrobatic dancer, c. 1292 - 1077 BC. Away from the constraints of formal tomb art, an ancient Egyptian artist chose to spend their free time painting this beautiful image on a limestone flake. From the Workers Village of Deir el-Medina. Museo Egizio Turin 📷 me #Archaeology
My photo shows a limestone fragment measuring 17 cm x 11.5 cm x 4 cm with a painting of a female dancer shown in profile performing an acrobatic back bend, a so-called ‘crab’ position. The girl has long wavy/crimped black hair which falls down to the ground. She is wearing large gold circular earrings and a black kilt with a decorative red and white pattern which is tied at the front around her hips.

This limestone fragment comes from the Workers Village of Deir el-Medina which housed the artisans who worked on the royal tombs in the Valley of the Kings. Artists used ostraca (flakes of limestone and broken pottery pieces) as sketch and note pads for practice drawings, sketching, writing poetry etc.etc. Thousands of ostraca have been found at Deir-el Medina.

Wow, a 3,400 year-old ancient Egyptian paint box containing its original pigments! Looks similar to a modern-day set! An inscription tells us it belonged to Amenemope, Vizier during the reign of king Amenhotep II. 📷 The Cleveland Museum of Art www.clevelandart.org/art/1914.680 #Archaeology
A Cleveland Museum photo showing an ancient Egyptian paint box carved from boxwood with five oval wells containing original paint pigments. Dimensions 2.2 cm x 21 cm x 3.6 cm. From top to bottom the preserved cake pigments are red (red ochre), blue (Egyptian blue), green (a mixture of Egyptian blue, yellow ochre, and orpiment) and two of black (carbon black, from charcoal).

On the front of the box there’s an inscription inlaid in Egyptian blue with the name Amenemope who was Vizier during the reign of Amenhotep II, Dynasty 18. It translates as ‘The overseer of the city and vizier Amenemope. Master of secrets of the west bank [of Thebes]’. A red inscription on the back reads ‘Amen-Ra, Lord of the Thrones of the Two Lands’. Dated c. 1427-1401 BC.

A small purple glass vessel in the shape of a pomegranate probably used as a container for perfumed oil. Height 6.9 cm (2.7 in), Diameter 6.6 cm (2.5 in) The lighting enhances the translucent purple glass which replicates the colour of a ripe fruit. There is some encrustation particularly around the calyx which has one lobe missing.

one of two new poems in @ex-puritan.bsky.social today among so many, many friends! "...she says a poem where nothing impossible happens in it, just the truth, and I say OK and put her in this poem and she sprouts forty two robin wings down her neck and back and legs..."
My Daughter Asks Me to Write an Honest Poem

And when I ask what she means she says a poem
where nothing impossible happens in it, just the truth,
and I say OK and put her in this poem and she sprouts
forty two robin wings down her neck and back and legs
and she says why would you do that, that’s not true
and I say OK I say Sorry and I put an orchard
in her arms, a huge orchard, with rows of pear trees,
and it’s spring and a million white blossoms fur her skin like snow
and she says DAD she says THIS ISN’T REAL and
I say I am sorry my love I didn’t mean to it’s just that
but it’s too late, she’s gone upstairs, I hear her feet
march across the floorboards, soft claps
like a dozen cages closing in a bird shop that specializes
in songless birds, and once more winter settles softly
in my mind, I walk my orchard’s empty rows and remember
how full my arms used to be when my daughter was young,
how busy my hands, my sad, empty hands
reaching for this liar’s pen.
