Treasure Island didn't have hilariously incompetent pirates. Or really cool ghosts. Or, for that matter, sly puns. And its parrot was nowhere near as cool as the one in 'The Blood of the Cutlass.'
This is a rollicking adventure with a surprisingly solid sense of history behind it. That doesn't prevent the action from taking sudden sharp turns away from mundane reality - in a really delightful way.
The writing is top-notch, the characters are engaging, and the story is just plain fun from start to finish. Highly recommend for young and old.
Who says you have to be a kid to love a sea yarn?
From the back of the book I understand there are sequels. I suspect the whole loony crew will show up again. Good.
