When the bribes aren't enough to get votes, try murder to get votes. This administration is full of assholes.

One of America’s Last Chestnut Groves Is About to Be Destroyed for a Data Center
A rare 200-tree American chestnut grove in West Virginia may be cleared for data-center development, but the project denies the site is on its land.

True, I don't mind paying my fair share for road maintenance, but doubling my yearly tax bill on a lighter, cheaper, EV has always felt punitive.

The government *still* isn’t tracking how often immigration agents detain U.S. citizens. We are. 500+ Americans have been handcuffed, held at gunpoint or held against their will in Trump’s second term. Our tally is almost certainly an undercount. THREAD (content warning: violence) ⬇️

Two years from now when motherfuckers are like "sure, Newsom is terrible but the alternative is a Republican," remember all of us from all political inclinations who shouted at the top of our lungs about what a duplicitous, opportunistic shitbag he is so we can avoid being in that scenario.

Lotta talk about press freedom. So let's dig into economics research on how press restrictions shape society, democracy, and yes, our economy. (Spoiler: Trump's not the first to play this game. Restricting the press can help politicians, but always hurts voters.) www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptg9...

"This election is about the threat of trans kids" is the worst possible messaging for Dems yet so many candidates are leaning into it. No voter will flip R->D over it. Low-info voters read this as "you're focused on bullshit that doesn't affect me" while the base reads this as "you're an asshole."

This is a real good thread and illustrates one of many reasons I am sad Talarico threw trans children under the bus - he almost certainly didn't need to. Texans don't want to ban trans girls from playing sports, they want clean water to drink.

Okay so @defector.com has had an odd glitch since the site redesign a couple of weeks back where the wrong photo and headline are often put together on the main page and I was going to ask them about fixing it but this just happened and as far as I'm concerned they have to leave it as is.
Screenshot for a Defector podcast episode with the headline "Consider the Emotional Lives of Scallops" only the accompanying photo is a white gormless stubbled red-headed UK singer of recent notoriety giving a flat smile to the camera while wearing a washed out peach top as beige as he is against a flat background. So, actually, probably a scallop anyway.

Having a sport related definition of trans and having hormone monitoring might be useful at the professional level. This kind of testing can be rolled into anti-doping monitoring. Others may be more knowledgeable here.

Sportsmanship and rules for fair play exist already. As a 5'2" 120lb person who played roller derby against other females nearly twice my size (and better players to be honest) I have to laugh. 🤣 Padding and helmets are already required. I question the efficacy of more complicated rules.

Wildly different bodies are part of sport anyway. Everyone has genetic strengths and weaknesses. Training to mitigate your weaknesses while building on your strengths is a cornerstone of sports.

Interesting, not sure how this works at the recreational level. Having categories of male, female, and unclassified seems to work in some cases. It's good that pre-pubescent kids can just play without grouping.

Starting at the beginning of FY 2026, ICE stopped collecting data on miscarriages among pregnant people in the agency's custody. www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-i...
The Guardian filed a Freedom of Information Act request and then filed suit in collaboration with the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press to obtain data on the number of pregnant people in ICE detention. Eventually, ICE shared records tracking the number of pregnant, postpartum and nursing women who were in detention from October 2024 through mid-January 2026, but only provided data on miscarriages up to 3 October 2025. In internal documents provided to the Guardian, the agency said it did not have miscarriage data for subsequent months because of a change in its medical accounting system.

In response to follow up questions about its tracking practices after 3 October 2025, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, first said that the agency was tracking miscarriages in monthly reports. But later, the spokesperson confirmed what was in its internal documents – it does not have data on miscarriages from October 2025 through June 2026.

DHS has never before acknowledged that it had lost count of miscarriages – not even when US senators asked the agency for the data.ICE detained a record number of pregnant people but could not share data on miscarriages after 3 October 2025
Two bar graphs. The one on the left shows that there were still dozens of pregnant people in detention throughout FY 2026, but all of the sudden the data on miscarriages disappeared.
