I feel like the way Intel chose to position the product in the market was just… uninspired. But I also gave up a New Year’s Eve fixing a bug I found at the last minute before release for manufacturing, so maybe I’m just salty.

What’s weird to me is that optane could have gone faster than a x4 NVMe bus, but when companies started scaling to x8 they just slapped two NAND controllers on it and glued two NAND SSDs together. Optane was marginally faster than NAND on a x4 bus, but the margins were too slim to market.

I also think it was like 10 years too early. I remember when Stoney Beach was being marketed and the approach was “so much faster than your hard drive” and it’s like… duh? But the difference between performance on NAND and 3DXP couldn’t be realized on SATA drives and NVMe was still fairly nascent

I remember working on Optane back in the day. Very cool technology and wish that Apache Pass had taken off.

This is Knap. It's a new language I created that turns data into Markdown. Knap should feel familiar and comes with a wonderfully pleasant syntax to modify and format plain text.

I noticed this with someone I follow and it’s so much that I can’t tell if it’s just Meta trying to juice their threads engagement numbers or if people really think I want to see every threads post they comment on. I’d even understand it more if it was posts they authored, but it’s just replies…

I think we’ll see a new Age of Enlightenment, albeit not likely on the scale of 150 years, where there is a return to the value of individual reasoning. Rather than kings and lords and religious leaders be the mandates we break free from, it’ll be the machines.

I think I’m especially interested in this sort of speedrun that is happening - the Kant quote I start the piece with refers to Sapere Aude as the motto of the enlightenment. But back then there certainly weren’t computers that could convince you of things. Or even fast or easy access to information.

I’ve received some positive reception on this post from people who are both quite pro-AI as well as skeptics. I think people are starting to come around to the idea that LLMs are best treated as tools and not magic work machines.

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

Famously when I want to hide my data exfil from foreign adversaries, I also do it using UDP via Netcat. No one would ever look at UDP via Netcat.
Screenshot from Season 2 Episode 1 of The Undeclared War, featuring a subtitle that reads "Uh, no. Trusov used UDP via Netcat." as an answer to the question of whether the Russians are aware of their data loss. There are three old white men sitting at a table with tea cups on it, as one is to expect from a show about the UK government.

Like all I want to know is: 1. What time was this version published? 2. What time was this version yanked? 3. Did I download the affected package at a time between answer 1 and answer 2?

A thing I've noticed that is mildly annoying - Package repositories are falling victim to a very typical programming problem. Use datetimes instead of bools. Pypi? yanked: false crates.io? yanked: false npm? Lol deleted no metadata left nerd golang? Maybe the git timestamp on the go.mod change?

I think passkey UX also feels lot less wack if you still put in your username before attempting to sign in with passkey - it will remain more familiar for the user, while also seemingly having some dope server-side benefits.

You talk about the primary key collision issue and how a login attempt passes info about what account you’re logging in to. Would this necessitate websites require me to put in my username instead of trying to ram passkeys down my throat on page load? (Ahem, Amazon)

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

I unintentionally switched to Bing at work a while back and it’s insane how much I accepted Google’s enshittification. I search and then immediately start scrolling to find the thing I’m looking for. In Bing, the result I want is at the top like 9/10 times. Google requires a scroll 10/10 times.

I’m excited to hear that. For like 2 years or so now I’ve been trying to steer people to using passkeys and then having to explain how to deal with the 90s-spam-site level of popups in order to do what they wanted to do lol

dade @0xda.de · 19/04/2026
Though I also think that Amazon prompting me for a passkey as soon as I hit the homepage is also an insane design decision. Just because passkeys are available doesn’t mean you should remove a user’s intent to login. Let me AT LEAST hit a login button before you prompt me for a passkey.
000
dade @0xda.de · 19/04/2026
The UX for passkeys got completely bungled as everyone started to support them, because no one thought about how their support would interact with every other component that supports it. It could have been so much better than it is.

dade @0xda.de · 19/04/2026
I don’t think the problem is that everyone is treating it like an enterprise customer solution. I think the problem is that everyone is trying to play the “capture user credentials to lock them into our ecosystem” game. That’s why 1Password, Chrome, and Apple all want my passkey every single time.
