Man who purchased a farm as a tax dodge now complaining as it’s hard work. What a hypocrite.

Nottingham today. Everywhere tomorrow. 2,700 staff put at risk. 600+ jobs targeted. At least 48 courses facing closure. What happens here sets the template for the sector. Stand with Nottingham.

From my perspective, performing like that puts too much out there. It asks for a kind of attention I didn't want. Sure, all the tables and measuring and campy lore of Warhammer is nerdy, but it doesn't put *you* in an uncomfortable spotlight, and you can diffuse any awkwardness with laughter.

Agreed (from the British perspective). I wonder if it has to do with cultural feelings about outward expressiveness. Or maybe it's just different cohorts. For me, LARPing is far too theatrical, but my partner and her friends are mainly am dram types.

Yeah, not exactly somewhere you'd take an exploratory stroll through.

It's pretty funny to see all of the liberties taken with relative scale scaled up to that size. The original space marines were designed to be small and viewed from above; big and viewed from below it looks quite silly (in an endearing way).

It's big, but it's only really visible from the car park, which is pretty much enclosed on all sides. Not something you'd really stumble across.

It's not fair or good for politics, but I think there's a big piece of human psychology that equates confidence in presentation with competence in action. As ever, swlf-belief goes a long way. Thoughtful introspection, on the other hand...

Warspanner 40,000 @0j.io · 04/10/2026
I think the importance of sounding confident shouldn't be underestimated. Trump may ramble near-incoherently, but he still knows how to handle his audience. It doesn't really matter what he's saying; the contour of his intonation lets them know when to laugh, when to cheer, how to feel.

Having moved away from the London area two or three years ago, I'm still adjusting to restaurants not necessarily adding a tip to the bill as a matter of course. Some do, some don't.

... The other week we went out for lunch at a restaurant, and realised too late that the card machine hadn't offered a gratuity option, and we had no cash between us. Mortifying! So I'm back to making sure I always have some on me. We'll leave a generous tip next time.

I was getting quite used to never using cash. Then we started going to a pub quiz that only took cash, so I made sure to always have a bit on me. But we moved again and I fell back out of the habit. And then...

Labour was polling a little over 30% when these articles were written. It is genuinely strange that the Conservative Party is not being subjected to the same obituaries by op-ed given its frequent sub-20% polling.

They do have responsibilities as a marketplace operator: they probably wouldn't get away with it if illegal drugs were being sold on there, for example.
000
Warspanner 40,000 @0j.io · 02/10/2026
Amazon isn't the seller here, but the marketplace provider. That's part of the issue: the sellers are dropshippers, so there isn't much prospect of bringing legal action against them. But that isnt to say that action *can't* be taken against Amazon; just that they have the cloak of "it's not us".

The shopping platform, sure, but an awful lot of the Internet relies on Amazon Web Services, unfortunately. Unpicking all that will tale a lot of effort and time.

Not that it's impossible to buy third party Kindle cases on there, but at that time they were super particular and strict about what they allowed. Which demonstrates that they're capable of vigorous enforcement, and are choosing not to bring it to bear in the interest of child safety.

Warspanner 40,000 @0j.io · 02/10/2026
I used to work for a company that sold on Amazon Seller Central, and this is very true. They were great at shutting down listings for third party Kindle cases, for example.

All this behind-the-scenes proprietary conversion stuff just seems unavoidably brittle to me. Sure, natural words look less intimidating than alphanumeric codes, but ultimately if your objective is to address every location on Earth, you're going to need an open, regular, language-agnostic system.

Warspanner 40,000 @0j.io · 01/10/2026
God, what a mess.
110
Warspanner 40,000 @0j.io · 01/10/2026
But having a different system of codes depending on the language opens a whole other can of worms! People who are in an unfamiliar country are, if anything, more likely to get lost!
130
Warspanner 40,000 @0j.io · 01/10/2026
The idea of localizing the word list reveals one of the fundamental flaws in the whole concept: having a global geocode system that assumes an English-speaking userbase is limiting at best, and could be seen as chauvinistic and dangerous.
120
Warspanner 40,000 @0j.io · 01/10/2026
Like, if you deliberately redirect someone from a retired code to its replacement, tell them the code has been retired. If a code in a URL is unrecognized, tell the user and maybe don't show them some random location on the map. If there are localized word lists, make it apparent which is in use.
120
Warspanner 40,000 @0j.io · 01/10/2026
I get different results depending on VPN location, so I don't think language settings are the full story. And the fundamental issue is pretty much the same: changing the output without announcing that you're doing so undermines the whole exercise. bsky.app/profile/0j.i...

If I switch my VPN to a US server, I get clip.apples.leap, which is what's in the preview above. It appears to be falling back to a country- or region-level default. Again: bad!
010
Warspanner 40,000 @0j.io · 01/10/2026
Which suggests that if it encounters an unrecognized code in the URL – even a formerly valid one – it just fails silently and gives you some other default location (depending on location services, geo-IP, etc.). Another extremely bad design decision!

Warspanner 40,000 @0j.io · 01/10/2026
For me it sends me to pretty.needed.chill (Magdalen Bridge in Oxford), which is also where it sends me if I just visit the site with no code and refuse location permissions. I double checked the default location on another browser, to confirm that it's not just caching the last place I viewed.

I wouldn't trust this unsourced graphic. It may be nonsense, and if it isn't, it doesn't state what population it refers to; these could be global statistics, for example.

Interestingly, if you scaled the graphics such that their feet were all touching the out-of-frame zero line, that could actually be a pretty effective way of showing the detail without misleading the audience. It would intuitively communicate that you're not seeing all of the Y-axis.

Warspanner 40,000 @0j.io · 23/09/2026
I almost feel like someone is using reductio ad absurdum to demonstrate their position in the debate over whether the Y-axis should always start at zero.

Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

I've seen plenty of self-described liberals getting nostalgic for his presidency, and not even in a "he was the lesser of two evils" way, but with seemingly genuine respect for the man, and the era of politics.

It's impossible, this is AI slop. Several things give it away; the first us that the virtual spaceship occludes the real physical lights in the ceiling; how exactly is a projector supposed to do that? You can't project darkness.
