I'm not even kidding about the fingers thing. I know the state of the art is well past that kind of thing by now, but I guess they used an old model or something.
A nasty AI-generated caricature of a bingo-caller with an evil predatory look in his eyes, surrounded by grinning but dead-eyed patrons. The caller's left hand is raised with five fingers and a thumb clearly visible. He's wearing a nametag that says "8PM-10PM", because the information was in the prompt and who cares how it manifests in the output.

I wouldn't quite call it doubling down. In light of this accusation, he's no longer supporting Planter, but he stands by his defence of him for previous scandals, and refuses to apologize for that. To be clear, I don't think that's a good position (previous scandals including the Nazi tattoo, etc.).
Screenshot from Ken Klippenstein’s blog:

“The allegations published yesterday that Senate nominee Graham Platner sexually assaulted a woman are different from the previous scandals.

“For one, they’re credible, based on Facebook messages from well before Platner entered politics. They’re also the first time Platner has been publicly accused of sexual assault. That crosses a line that tattoos, sexting and Reddit posts just do not.

“Last month I said of the Platner campaign that ‘People are done with the clean-cut types who’ve harbored ambitions for political office since they were on high school student council’ — I stand by what I said completely. Evidently Maine voters agreed, going on to vote for Platner by a huge margin. But that doesn’t mean they’re willing to look past sexual assault, which again, crosses a line.

“That line is getting blurred by the legions of media commentators trying to make it sound like defending Platner against previous attacks is the same as defending him now.”Screenshot from Ken Klippenstein’s blog:

“All of these people took the present accusations against Platner seriously and promptly addressed them (and good on them for that). But it’s unclear to me what exactly they’re apologizing for other than not being clairvoyants able to foresee this week’s accusation before it happened.

“As for me, my apology is as follows:”

[A large mostly-empty box containing only the words “This space left intentionally blank” in the centre]Screenshot from Ken Klippenstein’s blog:

“I stand by my previous defense of Platner. Drunk tattoos and sexting-out-of-wedlock struck me as the most Marine shit ever. I literally know Marines who’ve done both but later grew up and became decent guys. (Hi if you’re reading this!) I still believe in my bones that people like that deserve to have a shot at public office and that our country would be better for it. But the Marines I’m describing were never accused of more serious things like sexual assault.

“People were right to give him a chance before; and they’re right to drop him now.

“‘But there were so many red flags,’ the argument goes, pointing to the sexting, tattoo, and Reddit posts. Think about that argument for a moment: it means that people should be disqualified from public office for things there isn’t evidence they actually did, just ‘red flags’ from which they can supposedly be divined. Ruling out anyone with Reddit post-level flaws bars millions of otherwise decent people from politics. The only people left are the exact kind of squeaky-clean, McKinsey consultant politicians that was the entire point of my Platner article in the first place.”

In this context, pretty much, but in case you weren't aware, the specific wording is a reference.
Screenshot of a tweet by "The Substack of Bobs Fett" (@agraybee), dated 17 June 2022:

"Every lifelong Catholic I've ever met is like 'I think we're supposed to give this food to poor people' and every adult convert is like 'the Archon of Constantinople's epistle on the Pentacostine rites of the Eucharist clearly states women shouldn't have driver's licenses.'"

For reference, that phrase is actually used on an otherwise blank screen, and the Windows 11 installation process looks like this: m.youtube.com/watch?v=e6x1... (Windows 10 installation looks like this: m.youtube.com/watch?v=v4hH...)
A black screen with "Setup is preparing your computer for first use" written in white text, horizontally centred about 25% up from the bottom edge. Below it is a horizontal white line, shrinking and fading to black at its left and right ends, with a small circle of glare in its exact middle, as if light is catching the straight edge of a black object, like the monolith in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The words "Grade is a cunt" superimposed over hospital room lit in sickly green lighting. A 3D map of the UK bearing the words "RESPECT" and "DECENCY" lies on the bed, with a dagger protruding from what might be its abdomen, if a landmass could have an abdomen. Beside the bed is a man wearing a suit and holding a handgun, addressing the camera as a news reporter might. This is a freeze frame from "Decline", which is the final episode of the TV current affairs satire Brass Eye. The phrase was shown for one frame only, and was a result of a dispute between Chris Morris (the suited man, and one of the programme's main writers) and Michael Grade (then controller of the programme's broadcaster, Channel 4), the latter of whom had been demanding the programme be heavily edited.

Sorry to resurrect an ancient post, but it simply has to be said: this house is wearing a fusion of two classic hats.
A wide-brimmed, shallow-peaked sombrero. It's black with a floral design on the underside of the outer edge of the brim, which gently curves upwards. The width of the brim overwhelms the height and width of the peak, like the patio of the house in the original post of this thread. An Australian cork hat. Corks hang from strings equally spaced around the edge of the brim, forming vertical lines reminiscent of pillars.

It's hard to capture in a single frame, but in this clip the stars in the flag on the right seem, if anything, to be arching down towards the red rather than up towards the yellow. In this freeze frame they're not even stars at all, and the hand holding the flag seems slightly mangled.
A freeze frame from the above video. At the right of the image, someone is holding a large Venezuelan flag, but their hand seems to be passing through the flag rather than grasping it, and there is a confused line of little squares on the blue stripe instead of stars.

What an interesting introduction, Mr CEO of Jenningsbet. I'd assume the thing you'd find at risk of loss on entering a betting shop is the contents of the punters' bank accounts, their ability to keep up rent and mortgage payments, their families' futures, etc. I guess I don't have domain expertise.
A screenshot of the start of the above-linked article. The by-line reads:

"Greg Knight, CEO, Jenningsbet | Betting and Gaming Council"

The opening paragraph continues:

"Walk into a betting shop this Christmas and you will find something Britain is in danger of losing. Laughter, conversation, familiar faces and a real sense of community. At a time when shared spaces are disappearing, bookmakers are keeping human connection alive."

Exactly. Which really undercuts item 3 in the simulation hypothesis trilemma, which is the crux of the argument for us being in a simulation. It's kind of fascinating that the concept of limited available resources never enters the argument.
From the Simulation Hypothesis article on Wikipedia:

In 2003, philosopher Nick Bostrom proposed the simulation argument, which suggests that if a civilization becomes capable of creating conscious simulations, it could generate so many simulated beings that a randomly chosen conscious entity would almost certainly be in a simulation. This argument presents a trilemma:

1. either such simulations are not created because of technological limitations or self-destruction;
2. advanced civilizations choose not to create them;
3. if advanced civilizations do create them, the number of simulations would far exceed base reality and we would therefore almost certainly be living in one.

Then if I'm reading the article correctly (and it's accurate), something other than your government ID has been compromised. That wasn't the only content of the breach, but it's the subject of much of the attention because of the recent age verification changes.
One of Discord’s third-party customer service providers was compromised by an “unauthorized party,” the company says. The unauthorized party gained access to “information from a limited number of users who had contacted Discord through our Customer Support and/or Trust & Safety teams” and aimed to “extort a financial ransom from Discord.” The unauthorized party “did not gain access to Discord directly.”

Data potentially accessed by the hack includes things like names, usernames, emails, and the last four digits of credit card numbers. The unauthorized party also accessed a “small number” of images of government IDs from “users who had appealed an age determination.” Full credit card numbers and passwords were not impacted by the breach, Discord says.

There's also "L·L", which appears to be something exclusive to Catalan, distinguishing two instances of L that just happen to appear next to one another from the Ll digraph, which functions something like a letter in its own right (similar to some other languages such as Welsh).
The long-press popup for the letter L on the Samsung Android keyboard. The options are:
· (a middle dot)
L·L (two instances of the letter L separates by a middle dot)
Ł (a letter L with a diagonal stroke through it, as used in Polish to represent a "w" sound)
Ľ (a letter L with a caron – though the caring is rendered to look more like an apostrophe – representing a "lj-" sound in some versions of Ukrainian and Slovak)
Ļ (a letter L with a cedilla, used to represent a palatalized "l" sound in Latvian
Ĺ (a letter L with an acute accent)

For what it's worth, as an English child, I, too, found it strange. In practice it's pretty clear from context which sense is meant (e.g. going *to* a surgery vs going to hospital *for* a surgery). Here's what the OED (via Etymonline) has on some of the extended meanings:
According to OED, the British sense of "session at which a Member of Parliament (or other public servant) is available locally to be consulted by constituents" is by 1951, from an extended sense in medical practice of "regular session at which a doctor receives patients for consultation" in a room or den set aside for that purpose called a surgery (by 1846). The word has been extended in Britain to other free consultations for advice.

Not to judge a book by its cover – I'm sure this is a perfectly good game – but the idea that the world's greatest minds should be dedicating their lives to this is very funny.
A promotional image for the computer game "The Battle of Polytopia". It has a friendly, bright and colourful blocky style. The characters have cube-shaped heads with big eyes and no other facial features, giving them a very cartoony appearance.

They appear to be:
- a footsoldier with sword and helmet
- an archer wielding a bow and wearing a headband with feathers tucked into it
- some sort of made holding a staff topped with a large ornament (possibly a gem)
- another footsoldier, this one wearing full plate armour and holding a large shield
- a character on some sort of mount (presumably a horse)

If you ever find yourself in the East Midlands, Papplewick Pumping Station is like a cathedral to steam. Unfortunately it wasn't "in steam" when I visited, but I'm reliably informed that it's well worth timing your visit to catch that.
An interior view of Papplewick Pumping Station. Two enormous flywheels – painted bright red and dark green – protrude from the floor below at either side of the room. Between them, there are fenced-off openings for large pistons which extend through to the floor above. Each opening has a centrifugal governor at one corner. The back of the room is lined with ornate pillars, painted cream, green and gold. Behind the pillars are two large cylinders lined with narrow wooden planks and bound with gold-coloured metal bands. The top third of each window is patterned with stained glass.

Not every conversation is a policy debate! This all started with you responding callously to someone saying that the children of parents who don't vaccinate don't deserve the suffering that might befall them. (I don't try to fight with their propaganda, nor have I implied that I do.)

If I recall correctly, it's a combination camcorder/tiny laptop. When shooting video you'd hold it like one of those flag vertical camcorders like this, I think.
A small Canon camcorder. It's shaped roughly like a chunky rectangle, with the lens at the top edge of one of the narrow sides, and the viewfinder on the corresponding edge of the opposite narrow side. The large side on the left (from the perspective of the camera operator) has a foldout screen which can be used instead of the viewfinder, or to play back what's already been recorded. The large side on the right (not visible in this photograph) has various controls including zoom, and a hand strap which is used to hold the camcorder.

I'm also curious about this, given that the origins of "dog" are famously mysterious (given very generous definitions of both "famous" and "mysterious"). He'd have been on firmer footing had he regaled her with the fact that canaries are indirectly named after dogs, by way of the Canary Islands.
"At press time, reports confirmed a half hour had passed since Engel had told Agundez she needed to get home to feed her dog, and he was still talking about the larger working canine breeds that had given rise to the word 'dog.'"

He does actually touch on that in the article, but the overall tone is condescending enough that I’d imagine most gen Z-ers would have given up by that point. The article is about gen Z, but it very clearly isn't for them. It’s written with the assumption that the reader will be older than that.
Excerpt from the article:

“Having said that, it’s clear what they’re getting at. A brilliant, dedicated and compassionate person with absolute power, making sensible decisions in the long-term national interest – not being troubled by the grubbiness of political rivalry, the wilful misinterpretation of their beneficent policy by those who wish to grab power for themselves – would be a wonderful thing. Its only downside is that it’s impossible to achieve. No dictator or monarch in history has ever stuck to that approach for more than a week and most of them never tried it.

“But I can understand why the chaos and disappointment of contemporary politics might make a naive person yearn for a clear-eyed nutter knocking people’s heads together. Just last week, Rachel Reeves, supposedly part of a grownup, responsible and progressive government, backed a third runway for Heathrow airport in the name of economic growth. That’s the number one priority now and the government wants everyone to know it. I’m not against economic growth but it’s definitely not the most important issue. Averting climate catastrophe should take precedence. I mean, shouldn’t it? Or is that just woke? I thought LA had basically burned down. Is this really the time for us to make a massive airport massiver?

“Am I missing something? Is this not the overt prioritising of a government’s short-term political survival over the biggest crisis humanity is facing? With any broader perspective at all, opening a new runway at Heathrow is stupid. And I think our current government are, in political terms, the good guys. Yet here they are doing wrong because of the exigencies of staying in power under the current democratic system. The working of democracy and the electoral cycle routinely condemn us to this kind of poor decision. In many ways, it is pretty repellent.”

I'm afraid you're wrong there: "till" is the older word; "until" derived from it. It was then re-abbreviated to "'til" for poetic purposes. www.etymonline.com/word/until#e...
Etymonline entry:

until (prep.)
c. 1200, from till (prep.). The first element is un- "as far as, up to" (also in unto), from Old Norse *und "as far as, up to," from Proto-Germanic *und- (source also of Old English oð "up to, as far as," Old Frisian, Old Saxon, Gothic und), from PIE *nti-, from root *ant- "front, forehead," with derivatives meaning "in front of, before."
The two syllables have the same meaning. Originally also used of persons and places. As a conjunction from c. 1300. Similar formation in Swedish intill, Danish indtil (northern English and Scottish formerly also had intill/intil "into, in"). The Modern German equivalent, bis (Old High German biaz), is a similar compound, of Old High German bi "by, at, to" and zu "to."

Keir Starmer has become the next world leader to congratulate Donald Trump on what he calls a "historic election victory".

"I look forward to working with you in the years ahead," the UK's prime minister says, adding:

"As the closest of allies, we stand shoulder to shoulder in defence of our shared values of freedom, democracy and enterprise.

"From growth and security to innovation and tech, I know that the UK-US special relationship will continue to prosper on both sides of the Atlantic for years to come."

The window art on this place is so fucking funny
A photo of the shop frontage of "Denny's Tattoo Collective". The window is white with a large black and white pencil drawing of a female model's head – with a tilted head pose, her straight hair artfully falling in front of her eye – wearing a serious expression and very conspicuous clown makeup. She has large vertical ovals around her eyes with a vertical black streak through the middle of them, her whole lower face is painted white, and her nose is painted red. To her top-left and bottom-right are the words "Custom" and "TATTOO" in very different typefaces, and in the other two corners of the window are two pink roses, one of which is about 50% faded out for some reason.

They gave them tiny little dangling robo-dicks.
A tiny little black stick-like protrusion dangles directly between the robot's legs.Another frame of video showing the same protrusion, to demonstrate that it wasn't just something else behind it. I presume it's a sensor to aid with foot placement, avoiding tripping, etc.

Lol.
A screenshot of four posts from the thread being discussed.

The first post contains this instruction:
"Avoid using health terms metaphorically, even if they aren't used that much in health care anymore."

Three posts posts below that, the same person uses the phrase "avoid clichés like the plague".

I never realised alligators could become tour guides or marry human pop stars

What the hell’s going on in these product images? Obviously the little radio isn’t an “Amazon Error”, but what’s the scam? Is there some sort of rope-a-dope they’re pulling on customers, or is it some kind of bizarre image-based SEO? Is image recognition used for search rankings?
A close-up Amazon product image of a replacement PS5 DualSense analogue stick, with a tiny portable radio edited into the whitespace in the top-right of the image. The second image from the same Amazon listing, featuring the exact same close-up of the analogue stick, with the exact same photo of a portable radio pasted into the corner, but this time the radio is slightly larger, and above it there's red text that reads "Ignore the radio, Amazon Error".
