A grocery store in Pforzheim, Germany, published a job vacancy on Facebook. A reply reads: "It would be better if you hire Germans w/o migration background, otherwise my family won't shop with you anymore." The store's reply is something to behold. I append a translation. [Post & reply verified]

edekaberger Sehr geehrter Herr Kritter,

Wissen Sie aber, was uns tatsächlich hart treffen würde?

Dear Mr. Kritter,

Thank you very much for your insightful comment under our job advertisement. Apparently, we have made a serious mistake in our personnel policy.

We have to admit: People with a migration background actually work for us! And now hold on tight: We have even hired them deliberately!

Without checking their family tree, without proof of origin and without checking whether the grandparents were really German enough.

How on earth could we?!

Instead, we focused on completely irrelevant things such as qualifications, friendliness, reliability and commitment.

And it gets worse, Mr. Kritter!

Our employees of different nationalities not only work together, they laugh, support each other and even celebrate together. At our last staff party, we danced to Bollywood as well as to Bavarian music. Unbelievable, isn't it?

Now you announce that your family no longer wants to shop with us because of this.

Of course, that hits us hard.

But do you know what would actually hit us hard?

If all our employees with a migrant background were suddenly no longer there. Because then we could close our markets right away!

Because these people are not interchangeable workers, but an indispensable part of our team. They do great work every day and deserve respect instead of prejudice!

That's why we tell you very clearly:

Our employees are not bargaining chips. Human dignity is not a question of turnover. And racism has no place with us!

We are proud of our international team and will certainly not exclude anyone because of their origin just to keep a customer. We would rather do without your purchase than without our values.

Warm greetings from an employer who continues to judge people according to their skills and character. Not according to their family tree.

EDEKA BERGER. MANY NATIONALITIES. ONE TEAM. ZERO ROOM FOR RACISM.

It is stories like this that remind me of how many good people live in this distorted world. We need to share more positive stories to strengthen our collective resolve that we will prevail. If I lived in Pforzheim I would definitely shop in this store.

So, the unhappy client wants a German attendant that never traveled abroad to try new possibilities? I mean, it is difficult to understand his demand for a German employee, but that part “w/o migration background” really catches me. 😟
