It would be good for the USMNT to treat the Copa America/Gold Cup/Nations League as legit high stakes events. It’s dumb for these players’ entire careers to come down to how they play in the Round of 16 every four years and they appear to have crumbled under that pressure

The Copa America is 1. inherently a more achievable championship than the World Cup & 2. would be the USMNT’s greatest accomplishment in their entire history if they ever win it. So yes every time I do see it referred to as “World Cup prep” I am a step closer to becoming the joker

I feel like we used to do that! I remember the Gold Cup being a capital T Thing during the Bob Bradley years. We aren’t above caring about federation level trophies!

It would be good and they did not do that this cycle. The U23s really need to play with urgency at the Olympics too because a.) they are really good and b.) I think a lot of them will be in strong consideration for the next WC.

I am still baffled by the notion that the two federations exist separately. 10 member nations in CONMEBOL, while CONCACAF has 41! And still the Gold Cup is the "US or Mexico wins with honorable mention to Canada once" tournament because there's basically no big enough other nations. Merge that shit

Huge difference between the Copa America and the other two which have a much lower level of competition, though, and the United States can't count on reliably being invited to Copa

I would argue they do treat those events seriously. it’s more that the non-soccer fans don’t care about them, which is why the World Cup is more high stakes (trying to convert non-fans into fans).

I think they absolutely do (pre- World Cup Gold Cup the exception). The problem is the competitions themselves and the way all of them exist to milk the American market and not be the serious, high stakes events the USMNT needs them to be.

Copa America is treated as high stakes The problem with Gold Cup/Nations League is that US/Mexico and now Canada are just a cut better than the other countries. The US would benefit from playing teams better than the US in competitive games not equivalent ones

Ehhhhh yes to Copa America, which I think we do treat as high stakes, and lose anyway. I think we should try to win -- but place less value on winning -- the Gold Cup and Nations League. Beating Mexico et al should be a given, not a celebration, if we still can't beat a top 60 European team.
