If I was a journalist I would have also mentioned how funding for wilding pine control was cut by two thirds by the same government in 2023/24. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

Government doubles funding for wilding pine control efforts under a Budget 2026 boost

The announcement would lift annual spending on the control efforts to around $36 million a year on average.

Cut from $100M over 4 years to $10M a year in 2023/ 2024. Seems like a plan to let pines recover so NZ Govt can make a show of taking stronger action in an election year, 2026! #NZpol www.farmersweekly.co.nz/news/fears-w...

Fears wilding control gains will be undone by budget cuts

Before the programme NZ’s most vulnerable landscapes and ecosystems were being infested by wilding conifers.

The truth just doesn't matter to these two faced bastards. are they going to announce every tiny little dialback like grandpa saying, "here's 50 cents, go get yourself a big bag of lollies"? #NZPol

I would also raise the issue of Pamu (a state-owned enterprise) planting pine at scale under its 10-year forestry strategy. The left hand and right hand aren’t well coordinated, especially since escaped plantation pine is a major source of wilding pine spread.

Also interesting that federated farmers are welcoming the increase without mentioning the cuts.

$79m for willing pines, some of which will be spent on private land. Funded by the visitor conservation levy. Another farmer subsidy. Yet we can't get anything for kauri protection nationally beyond a vague promise of $2m from MPI savings.

Gee was this their weekend away plan - the PM, Deputy PM and local MP - how many does it take? Not very efficient

"Without adequate funding, wilding pine control work will go backwards, with cleared land prime for re-infestation and also further expansion across the region." www.rnz.co.nz/news/ldr/515...

Wilding pine work 'will go backwards' with reduced funding

Land cleared of the pest plants is now "prime for re-infestation".

I cycle around Otago & Canterbury & I see those pines everywhere. Removed a few thousand myself as part of a team for Christmas trees. Cuts to DOC budgets have had an impact too. Talked to a few DOC people near Twizel on projects there. Seems like rabbits & pines overlap & science budgets needed too

And if they get voted in again…that funding will magically disappear into some other money pot destined to enrich the private sector.

Maths are not my strong suit, to say the least, but if funding was cut by two-thirds, but later doubled, wouldn't there still be an overall reduction in funding?

I wrote to the journalist.

Hi Kate,

Thank you for the article highlighting Nationals funding boost for removing wilding pines.

Maybe in the interest of thorough reporting, you could revise your story to include the one about how they previously reduced funding in 2024?

One small funding boost doesn't balance out the larger funding cut - that's an overall reduction.
