It's important to know that when tech bros say they are "data driven" what they mean by "data" is their own experience and the assumptions. This is why you regularly hear things like "UBI will destroy society" and "if you give away housing no one will work" despite all studies showing the contrary.

They could stand to read some psychological theories, too. *Meaningful* employment (good enough pay, respect, autonomy, etc) contributes TO well being. Preferable to sitting around. Shit employment is worse than sitting around, so it makes sense people don’t want shit jobs that REDUCE well being.

Pavel the thing is they can't get past the "Gain or profit is motivating" mindset, & something not worked for is less valued. They cannot understand someone who is not motivated like they are. By that measure no billionaire should be allowed to control anything, most of them inherited a nice bundle.

YUP. Remember that in & of itself, the word “data” does not distinguish b/t a study of “does this thing suck” and a study of “do ppl think this thing sucks”. Both produce data. And it’s easy to pass off the latter as the former bc we’re generally not taught critical analysis (can’t imagine why not)
