"How would you explain programming to your grandma? How would a product manager describe what they do to their mom?" My grandma programmed mainframes before you were born. My mom has been a PM since before you started school. Maybe they should explain these jobs to you instead.

My mom did punch-card programming in grad school with compile-times measured in days; the first two moms I worked with professionally decoded Soviet missile telemetry for the NSA and led the team that developed the shuttle’s guidance software. (And my kid’s mother is a CTO!) Lazy, rank misogyny.

Not quite the same, as we’re talking mostly about sexism here, but my late father, born 1922, had computers before I was born. When he passed away in the 2010s, he owned an iMac, iPhone, iPad, and an Apple TV.

Ha. I am a grandmother. I worked for IBM training people on the first "small" office computers. Prior to that ran the computer lab in college, back when calculators were so expensive they were locked into the desks. I wrote an accounting program for government cost accounting not in COBOL. Etc.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeep. My grandma even told me about how one of the issues with the old punch card system was how if you dropped the stack, say good bye to your code. My grandpa specifically got beautifully fast internet in middle of nowhere Maine, and gave me a router for my first apartment.

My grandma developed the first computer classes for nurses at Adelphi university. Every computer I had before I was a college graduate was a hand me down when my grandparents got a new one. I stole this from her.
