Today I'm editing a 3rd edition of the first #PairsOfPumpkins story, "Family Ties." Portia and a young man she just met, have to move a body she incapacitated! #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WIPSnips

They both pulled, planting feet firmly in the floorboards and tugging with their whole bodies. The limp horse moved slightly within his clothes and armor until the friction caught against the floor, and he would no longer budge. They tugged harder still at the resistance, muscles flexing and teeth gritting in strain, but the horse proved all but immovable by this method.
Joseph’s added strength didn’t help much at all, as much as he tried. He wasn’t quite a runt but short and lanky for his age. The unconscious horse was easily two or three times their combined weight and by the time they gave up, they’d both broken out in a sweat. For her, it was from the dramatic change in temperature from the freezing outside to the balmy interior and being quite overdressed but for him, it was entirely from the effort.
They both stepped back to reconsider but Joseph went straight to shrugging off his robe and tossing it aside, revealing the long, purple nightshirt he wore beneath. Another vanity item forbidden in The Pale Lands were dyed textiles that served no practical function. Perhaps the wizard was some kind of smuggler but what were the value of clothes one couldn’t risk wearing outside?

“Don’t tell him where we’re going!” Jo howled, ripping off her bonnet in frustration and flinging it onto the ground.

“He knows where we’re going. It’s obvious where we’re going.”

“You don’t need to spell it out for him!”

“No; because he’s not an idiot!”

Edwards watched to the pseudo-siblings squabbling through the open tent flap with a fond half-smile, which he wiped from his face the moment he realised he was doing it. The storm had abated at last, though the air outside his bedroll was still chilly. His throat still felt raw but the cough had subsided.

He sat up, bare chested still, wondering what had happened to his soaked clothes. His bag was open beside him. Someone had rummaged through it while he was asleep and made no effort to hide their pilfering. It looked as though the thief had gone through and unwound all his rolls of bandages on purpose and knotted them, like they were trying to make a point.

"They caught the fighters on the ground. They can't take off!"

"Then we'll hold here and wipe 'em out!" Blackfeather roared. "Get your sorry carcass moving!" He shoved the pirate back out the door, then turned back to Armin and Calida. "This isn't over yet. I'll be back to get what I want."

As soon as the door slammed shut, Armin went to work. Calida strained against her restraints to no avail, but the Thyferran was more methodical in his approach. He adjusted his shoulders as much as he could, to bring his wrists closer together, then began feeling the outside of his binders with his middle finger. Calida heard him grunt with effort and asked, "What are you doing?"

"Getting free," he answered. "Give me a second."

There was a series of five beeps, and Calida heard a click. Armin brought his arms around, one still wearing the binders, but the other freed. He shucked the restraints off, then went to work on Calida's. Seconds later, he pulled her from her seat. "How did you do that?" she asked.

"Intelligence training, remember?" Armin asked, as if it should've been obvious. "These are TX-1 series binders. The Empire abandoned them years ago because of faulty catches - there was a backdoor code sliced in during manufacturing. If you know the code, it's easy to get out."

He and Calida seized their blasters and ident cards from the table and moved to either side of the door.

#WIPSnips Context: Cloak (The Cheshire Cat) created a hyperrealistic illusion for Alice that made her think she was 10 years old again and being chased by ghosts of her past... and this is her after figuring out that it was all fake. (Definitely rewriting this when I get to it lmao)

Alice sighed sadly and without turning around, she said, “I know you there, Cloak.”
Cloak gasped from behind Alice, and Alice turned around to face the cat.
“Rezina told me you could do illusions. I shoulda figured you was behind this from the beginnin’.”
“What are you doing? Get the illusion back up!” Alice heard Madigan’s voice yell, making her giggle.
“Oh, there will be no need for that, Madigan! I admire the effort, truly… but I’m bored of this place, now.” Alice blew out air, and conjured fire into her hands, grinning again. “How ‘bout we go have some real fun?” Her child voice and her adult voice melded together perfectly.
She shot fire at Cloak, setting the cat on fire.

Our two travellers in space and time have been taken prisoner by Admiral Amberflame.

“Excellent. I find it makes such a difference when people cooperate,” said Amberflame, absent-mindedly brushing a non-existent speck of dust off his jacket sleeve. As he turned to address his crew, he saw the door open and the formerly desperate bear return.
“Ah, just the fellow. Bobbin, I want you to guard the prisoners. If they try anything that looks even vaguely iffy, you have my full permission to hurt them. As for the rest of you, I want six people to come with me to check the cargo. Everyone else is to go with Sparky,” he flicked a look sideways to the chubby hamster in the rugby shirt, “and make preparations to sail on the next tide. Look lively now.”
The crew trooped out, leaving Tim and Lydiatt alone with the bear. Tim tried to smile at it to appear friendly, but the gag he was wearing hid his efforts. The bear came over to him.
“If yous need to go to da bathroom, yous can’t until da boss says so.”
The bear went and sat on a barrel. After watching them for a while, it reached into its back pocket and pulled out a comic book. From time to time, it peered over the top to check that Tim and Lydiatt weren’t up to anything they weren’t supposed to be doing, like trying to escape.

“Krzht!” Devon exclaimed in his cubal tongue. Despite his best efforts to put forth minimal effort, there were just too many souls for Gus to process alone. His body’s throat would hurt from the chanting. His body’s knees and back would hurt from all of the kneeling. And despite how nice they smelled, his body’s nose would grow sick of smelling the burning herbs. He was becoming pre-fatigued just thinking of all the work they would need to do. He decided the best course of action would be to take a nap.

An excerpt from Supreme Danger and Gwen White, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. The passage describes a fictional president mouthing the national anthem while staging a tear for the cameras, then reflecting on his repeated stump speech, attacks on foreigners, the press and the Supreme Court, and his frustration with the justices who have overturned his initiatives. It ends with the president noting that the justices are appointed for life and he cannot fire them.

Nurse Schulz already commanded the ambulance crew in removing the extraneous cargo. She could probably run the whole show herself.
Esparanza got his two orderlies into her care then peered about to locate the approaching helicopter. That's when he saw the effort expended to get his own aircraft on the ground.
A couple of wreckers still worked at hauling cars from the parking lot. The Mil's pilot hadn't waited for them to finish. At least four cars brushed the fuselage. The front end of someone's Bentley had been crushed.
Even the ambulance had gotten into the act. Coming off the helicopter ramp, it had shoved the cars in front of it aside. A jam of them abutted its nose.
"A lot of bills to pay!" Esparanza shouted into the storm.
"Life's tough all over," the crew chief called to him as he and a crewman hurried by with landing flashlights in their hands.
A flare of brightness lanced over the parking lot. A helicopter's belly lights hung maybe twenty meters up, the aircraft's rotor wash whirling the rain into a mini maelstrom. The chief and his man waved their flashlights at the ship. They'd put that helicopter somewhere, maybe on top of a rich man's Rolls Royce.

Her eyes fluttered open, a difficult task.
From a distance, the lanky woman was almost human. But the features were warped, extending too sharp or too long in places, smudged by some invisible paint brush. Her fingers extended out, blackened and formed into needle-tipped points. The slits of her eyes were orange and yellow, burning with something subdued from years of effort.
Everything was colored with some bold resolve, set on a canvas of pale skin. Her hair was a singed brown, strands wiry and coarse, bleeding into obsidian horns where the start of one and the end of the other was fuzzy and uncertain. Haunches sat firmly in the territory of beasts, with legs that ended in vicious claws. On the surface of their skin, pressed against their chest, the thumping beat of some glowing core could be seen through the translucent layer, exposed and vulnerable.

5: The Fox
"I thought the Eel was enough," Elric said. "He was certainly slippery enough. I'm not sure I want to deal with a Fox next."
Bert realized he was the only one laughing at the pun, and earned a wink from Elric. The Fleetmaster and first in line for the crown of Keelwick had proved his merit in battles at sea and earned his place in the leadership group of the ongoing rebellion against the High King and The Capital. His fleet now held the entire sea making up the central east of their country. The man had always been fair to Bert, despite the fact Bert had been a major reason then-Princess Catrin Wyrmblessed had broken off her betrothal to Elric's brother, Darian Storme. Darian was still out there somewhere with a small force of knights. He had been drawn in by another Shepherd, Garrick Crowe. With Crowe's defeat and the loss of his engagement, the man had gone to ground and vanished. Nevertheless, Elric and Darian's parents, Queen Aldera and King Rowan still supported their overall efforts to overthrow the High King and return to peace with the Wyrm People and the dragons.
"I'm afraid we'll need to deal with many more before all this is over. Each new Shepherd we meet is worse than the last," Dray said, shaking his head. "I had hoped most of them would be stuck in The Capital with Arnaud, but it seems there is at least one more on the loose still."

Greg grabbed his iPhone, snapped a picture of Yi-erwu and showed it to him. “Look at yourself now!”
Yi-erwu laughed at the photo. He hadn’t even thought, he was still covered in coal dust apart from the white patches where the dust mask, clothes and helmet had been but beneath the dust he could tell he looked older.
“Take it that poster was the one splashed all over the media, too?”
“Yeah.”
He sighed in relief.
“So what about those? Why can’t we just take my dad’s angle grinder to them?”
“There’s something electronic in them. Told you they loosened them. They had some gadget, hold it near, push a few buttons and pop, loosened a notch. I’m not prepared to take the risk of shorting something out inside that makes them tighten again. There’s a release mechanism, but from what Lingjiu said, it’s on the inside. The only way to reach it is to remove them.”
“How? It can’t be removed without the release mechanism and the release mechanism is the only way to open them? Doesn’t make sense!”
“It makes perfect sense, but it wouldn’t be good for me. They’re meant to be worn for life, that’s how they were designed. Only when the head, feet and hands are removed will they come off and the release mechanism allow them to be opened… And only then so they can be put on someone else.”
“Shit! That’s sick!”
“Life’s cheap. As a slave the only value you have is the work you do. The moment you can’t do it you’re no use to them any more and then…” he made the finger across the throat gesture. “Oh, they’ll put the effort in if it’s just a broken bone but if it’s something incurable or old age it’s up to the great big slave compound in the sky.”
“No wonder you escaped when you did!”
“Nah, I had no fear of that. I ended up being one of the best workers on the camp. I was safe. Could’ve kept it up for another thirty or forty years no problem barring accidents and illness. I told you the reason I escaped. My brothers need me, remember?”

Squeeze, extend… Squeeze, extend…Squeeze, extend. Three times for good measure I opened and closed my hands, stretching my fingers out, feeling the tightness slowly ebb away. I turned my hands over, palms downward, watching now the rusted iron manacles and the lack of effort it took for them to cut into my skin. The flesh was already starting to react to the harsh edges by inflaming and blistering slightly from being rubbed raw. I wish that my body just would get the memo to adapt; to just harden more so I didn’t have to deal with skin irritation. Unfortunately, that just wasn’t the case for soft fleshy humans. And I, Xander No Last Name, was as human as they came. I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees as my hands dangled between my thighs, my hair falling to cover my eyes as I stared at the bolt in the wooden planks that chained me to the cart.
