“Technically it’s just sexual assault” is going to be a hell of a thing for his PR firm to pour a thinking whiskey over.

"Non consensual BDSM" is as stupid as saying "non consensual boxing" when someone gets punched in the face, but AFAIK, BDSM is not always sexual, they could be referring to harassment or torture that doesn't involve rape

I think it's decent framing for general public just bc consensual bdsm is widely misunderstood, in part thanks to fifty shades etc, so especially in short description, I get it. Plus I got the impression (could be wrong bc I refuse to read reports) he tried to explain stuff as legit bdsm

I agree with the sentiment of not tryna make things sound less bad than they are. However, BDSM is not always involving sex. Nonconsensual BDSM could be: imprisonment, torture, assault, rape, etc etc depending on what’s actually going on.

Heinous rape

May have something to do with the legal definition of rape in the jurisdictions involved. I know the UK has really weird specifics about it, so I wouldn’t be surprised that NZ does too. This is about avoiding a defamation or libel lawsuit.

Yeah anyone who says they're into bdsm who isn't vocal about informed and clear consent gets at minimum the side eye, nevermind this shit

Why ever would you use the term non-consensual sex? When would that ever not be rape? It wouldn't. Ever.

I think this is what journalists call "a wording that might be less likely to get us accused of defamation." But "alleged sexual assault/alleged assault" is probably a much, much better wording for that purpose than what they're using here.
