MissHalcyon @misshalcyon.bsky.social · 08/01/2025We don't talk enough about how nearly-impossible it is to hold down a full-time job as an Autistic. You mean I have to go to work every weekday, regardless of how stable I feel? You mean I have to be ready, capable, and able for 8 straight hours? It feels so hard. All the time. 3143375
Lindsay Douglas @enbyautieokie.bsky.social · 08/01/2025Yup. I had to leave my corporate office job after 7 years of claiming the ladder bc they couldn't accommodate my autism. I now work from home doing gig work bc I'm unable to complete my degree. I'm afraid under Trump I will end up homeless eventually 020
furureperfect.bsky.social @furureperfect.bsky.social · 08/01/2025You mean this company is buying not only my time and labor but also the expressions on my face? I'm sorry I don't have control of those 030
Isabel “Izzy” Black (Joely) @autisticalchemyst.bsky.social · 09/01/2025THIS. So much THIS. I've been trying for decades and it's impossible. I get fired because I can't cope with it. And yet I also feel ashamed because I can't cope with it. 010
dirt squirrel @dirtsquirrel.bsky.social · 08/01/2025I feel like I got lucky in having other physical and mental disabilities that were easier to get disability benefits from, which is insane, but working full time burns my audhd brain and body out SO FAST 040
Xiki 🎃🇵🇸🎨👹 @xiki-muffin.bsky.social · 08/01/2025Every day of work costs 110% of effort/energy. One night of sleep only recharges about 8%. This is not sustainable but we have to do it or die. 020
oldautisticwoman.bsky.social @oldautisticwoman.bsky.social · 08/01/2025Also people dislike us on sight. That doesn't help. 1160
La Cafedora @lacafedora.bsky.social · 08/01/2025This is real. I have a job at a college theatre that is turning out to be the best job I've ever had. Most it's maintenance and stage setup, but the key is that most of the work can be done any time I choose, at any speed I choose. Live shows are still demanding, but that's not the main phase. 140
InfiniteShay @infiniteshay.bsky.social · 08/01/2025I'm currently looking at a job that is entirely online and revolves around my schedule for that reason, but I had to go to school for ten years to even have them look in my general direction, so I feel this in my bones. 090
Azrael Argentum 🎨+✍🏻 @aargentum.bsky.social · 08/01/2025I can't do it. It makes me ill, literally. Even just 5 hours, I get bored easily and really anxious because my head screams to get out and do something to else. 120
Zael.exe @avrazael.bsky.social · 09/01/2025Yeah, and don't forget being at another public space where you feel ostracized 020
Kind Shark (E) she/her @kindshark.bsky.social · 08/01/2025I’ve never had a full time job but I worry it will be too much for me one day and I will crash and burn :( but I also feel like I have to give it a try 010
Ty Unglebower @tyunglebower.bsky.social · 08/01/2025I got so tired of the expectations of capitalism and commerce I kind of gave up and wrote a book about it. We cannot be ourselves and keep a manager or supervisor satisfied with our work. We have to match the "culture." We have to do everything the "company way" instead of our own (better) way. 030

necrodiverse.bsky.social @necrodiverse.bsky.social · 08/01/2025It's extremely hard and even if you do manage to hold the job it really limits your potential to thrive in your career so your earning potential is limited which of course is catastrophic under capitalism 😭 040
Si Mabury @smabs.eurosky.social · 08/01/2025I struggled for years with authority, always wondered why I had so many bad bosses but in reality it was me who couldn’t cope with the hierarchy, I was lucky enough to have a supportive husband and gave up work, I now just struggle with his authority 🙄😂 020
Emma @autistic-me.bsky.social · 08/01/2025And then somehow come home and cook, clean, exercise, socialise, hold down relationships and kids and god knows what else... I hate how much my body has taken from me and that I'm able to do none of this anyway. But how even the healthiest neurotypical is meant to do all of it I have no idea. 0160
Edward Allen @edwardallenthree.bsky.social · 08/01/2025I did it, once. I don't know how. I quit working 13 years ago to be a full time parent. Since then, late life diagnosis, three autistic kids, and no ability to even contemplate going back to work at this point. 040
Brooke Chang 🇨🇦 @brookechang.bsky.social · 09/01/2025It even happens with remote work. I was lucky enough to have a gig where I could work from home and set my own hours, and I only lasted a few months because of needing to work every day. 020
AutistGM @autistdm.bsky.social · 08/01/2025I'm high functioning until I'm not. Today happened to be really slow, which is really good because it's not a high functioning day 040
Natalya D @natalyad.bsky.social · 08/01/2025I'm not autistic but have other impairments which overlap in terms of barriers/capacity. I only manage to work part-time cos I have a huge control over my day and unless I'm in meetings I can plan my time quite flexibly. It was really hard to enter the job market and find this kind of niche work. 020
Sleepspace @sleepspace.bsky.social · 09/01/2025The worst part for me is getting ready in the morning. I can do the work fine, but i don't want to leave my quiet house to go somewhere full of noise all day 020
Morgan Moon @morgan-moon.bsky.social · 08/01/2025It is hard. I'm not autistic but I am a writer and the standard structure of a job was stressing me out because I could never do the one thing that calmed me down. Write. It's not designed for humans. It's designed to push out as much money as possible for the people on top. 020
MissHalcyon @misshalcyon.bsky.social · 08/01/2025Thankfully I work a job right now where I'm able to pace myself. There's no emergencies and I'm not on my feet all day. It's an office position. But other Autistics aren't so lucky. Any entry-level job (retail, etc) is far more challenging. Sometimes breaking into the workforce is the hardest part 2523
Disenfranchised Civilian @gonature.bsky.social · 08/01/2025Yes & that is why u need to find a job that fits your mental acuity. Me? Once upon a time? Blind hard work & endless socializing. Now? Need nature. Quiet. Very few co workers. "But what if I cant afford stuff?" Figure that shit out too. U may NEVER hav a home like others. No one matters. 000
Adam Makey @darkestadam.bsky.social · 08/01/2025I'm so grateful I'm self employed. But there's always that fear that if it goes away I will really struggle to find work. 010
Lex Fractal [they/them] @its-lex-actually.bsky.social · 08/01/2025My parents never empathized or understood this despite supposedly “loving me no matter what.” They had very little imagination about “what.” So now I have no family worth a damn, friends who care but have their own stuff going, and Level 2 support needs. I’ve been in the same crap job for 3 years. 030
nicholas-mutante.bsky.social @nicholas-mutante.bsky.social · 08/01/2025Someone else was just talking about this a second ago. Due to a number of vital projects in addition to work, I’m going to have to start announcing to my boss that it just won’t be possible for me to mask at work anymore. I need my energy, and work is supposed to support my living, not crush it. 010
