This is the rewritten version of the theoretical introduction to my dissertation! So I guess that makes it article 4/6 from the good old thesis now out in article form. Who could’ve guessed.

Interested in political legacies and political behavior in post-communist Europe? My review is now out in PRX. It draws on 200+ articles and discusses many conceptual and empirical problems in legacy research, along with ideas for addressing them and where the field could go next.

Political behavior and historical legacies in post-communist Europe

This week I’ve done around 20 post-election interviews, and one question keeps coming up: “Did it matter that [insert group] voted?” Yes. Quite a lot, actually. Elections are decided by voters voting, and different groups tend to have different preferences. That is more or less the whole idea.

Fair enough, but I meant for interpretation. If the new voters don’t turn out because of low salience, then a null on vote shares doesn’t really tell us if their preferences differ or not.

Really nice paper, I especially liked the within-municipality design. Thinking of Aggeborn et al. (BJPS) who find non-citizen turnout would rise 10–20pp if they could vote nationally. Could the small "dose" here partly reflect the low-salience local setting, not just small immigrant electorates?

Should immigrants be allowed to vote? This is a highly politically charged question. In a new research paper and substack piece, me and @tarekjaziri.bsky.social test the biggest objection to letting foreign residents vote locally, and find it doesn't hold up. 🧵 simonhix.substack.com/p/why-not-gi...

Why Not Give Immigrants the Right to Vote?
The fear that allowing foreign residents to vote in local elections would benefit left-wing parties turns out to be wrong.

That’s also how I would do it with limited resources. If I could afford more respondents than the bare minimum I would randomize.

It is 1.4 and the survey had 1800 respondents - still, it’s staggering. My very much educated guess is that Kalle Anka partiet would’ve received more votes if they were an alternative for in the survey
