Considerable flash flooding is possible across portions of New Mexico & West Texas today into mid-week. Flash flooding impacts are particularly possible near burn scars, low-water crossings & areas of complex terrain. Avoid travel through already flooded & vulnerable areas.

Burn scars from wildfires increase the risk of debris flows, which can destroy homes in their paths. Be aware of your surroundings and stay Weather-Ready by having multiple ways to receive weather alerts. weather.gov/safety/flood
After a wildfire: flash floods and debris flows. Floods and debris flows happen quickly after rainfall. Prepare now! Be aware of your surroundings and stay informed by having multiple ways to receive watches and warnings. Follow any evacuation or other instructions from local officials. If you have to shelter in place, get to the highest point inside your home. Go up, not out!

Rip currents are possible this weekend along the East Coast from Maine to Florida. Always follow advice from the local beach patrol and flag warning systems. And check your beach forecast before heading out: weather.gov/beach
Map titled "U.S. Rip Current Risk" showing composite data for September 25-26, 2026, from the NWS National Hurricane Center.

Legend:

Risk Levels: High (red), Moderate (yellow), Low (white), No Data (grey).

Cyclone Types: Depression (red circle outline), Storm (red icon), Hurricane (red hurricane symbol), Post-tropical cyclone or remnants (red circle with 'x').

Map Overview:

East Coast: High (red) rip current risk spans along coastal areas from Southern Florida through Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Long Island, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, with Moderate (yellow) risk extending into Maine, portions of Florida, and Puerto Rico.

Gulf Coast: Mostly grey/white with localized Moderate (yellow) and High (red) risk along the Florida Panhandle and southern Texas coast.

West Coast: High (red) and Moderate (yellow) risk along Southern California.

Offshore Tropical Systems: Hurricane Odalys and Hurricane Polo are shown south/southwest of Mexico in the Pacific.Rip Currents: Know Your Options. Rip currents are powerful currents of water moving away from shore. They can sweep even the strongest swimmer away from shore. If at all possible, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current: 1) Relax, rip currents don't pull you under. 2) Don't swim against the current. 3) Swim out of the current, then to shore. 4) If you can't escape, float or tread water. 5) If you need help, yell or wave for assistance. The image shows a rip current as a narrow flow of water moving in a line directly away from the beach, with waves on either side moving in the opposite direction towards the beach. Arrows point away from either side of the current and into the waves, parallel to the beach, indicating the path of escape from the rip current.

I’ve heard it said that “The incoming ‘super’ El Niño will create chaos around the world—and we are far from ready for it,” and while I do not disagree, I can’t help but think “chaos around the world” which “we are far from ready for” also just describes the present.
