#OnThisDay 65 years ago the Metropolitan Line was cut back from Aylesbury to Amersham following electrification from Rickmansworth to Amersham and introduction of A60 Stock. Previously trains switched between electric and steam locomotives at Rickmansworth buff.ly/kKFsCJV

A postcard entitled 'RICKMANSWORTH: Electric to Steam Sept. 1961' depicts an electric loco having just attached to a train destined for Liverpool Street in the London-bound platform while a steam loco, presumably having just hauled the train from Aylesbury, stands in the adjacent bay as it appears to be about to take on water.

#OnThisDay 35 years ago the unique Class 504 side-contact 1200V DC electric multiple units last ran between Manchester and Bury, a legacy from the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway's 1916 electrification of the route. It reopened as Metrolink in 1992. ee20213 buff.ly/vBUivIz

The last day of operation on the Bury line sees 504 unit M65456 at Bury Interchange. The Class 504 was a unique type of electric multiple unit that ran on 1200 V DC third rail with side-contact current collection, all other BR third rail units had the electric "shoe" on top of the rail. The type was used only between Manchester and Bury. They were built in 1959 at the BR workshops at Wolverton, and were finally withdrawn on the 16th August 1991 when the line was closed for conversion to form part of the Manchester Metrolink light rail system.

#OnThisDay 12 years ago the last C Stock ran in regular passenger service on the District Line, seen here at East Putney on the last day (Jack Gordon). Not universally popular, these were my favourite trains to drive... I was always happy on the Wimbleware service.

Viewed from the westbound platform, an eastbound C Stock train bound for Edgware Road calls at East Putney. The set number is 74 and three green notices have been stuck to the cab end and in the offside cab window: '1969 - 2014, Last District Line C Stock train, 3rd June 2014'
