Rather intrigued by this, A1 No 60154 Bon Accord near Skipton on 8 June 1965, with a Carlisle to Stourton semi fitted freight. I assume this can only have come via the Settle & Carlisle line. I'm sure they exist but I cannot recall seeing any photos of ex LNER locos working on that line.

Having had a great run behind No 1450 during the Severn Valley gala at the weekend, I remembered I had recently scanned a photo of one of her surviving sisters, No 1420, seen here at Titley Junction on a goods to Prestigne and Kington in August 1964 the month before services on these lines ended.

At Farringdon in April 1973, unrecognisable from today, apart from the roof, a BR peak hours only service from Moorgate to Hitchin, comprised of blue steam heated suburban coaches, is hauled by Brush Type 2, D5595 which became 31 175 and lasted until 1988. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

For many years Sulzer Type 2s, later Classes 24/1 and 26, held sway on all the lines north of Inverness. At Kyle of Lochalsh on 4 September 1971 two are at the station. No D5128, waits with a brake van, whilst at the platform, the 11.08 service to Inverness is preparing to depart behind a Class 26.

In April 1968, the evening service from Fort William to King’s Cross in the Monessie Gorge, has blue livered Class 29 No D6129 piloting green liveried classmate D6124. Within three years these North British built diesels would have been withdrawn. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

So typical of the era covered by this book, north of Oxenholme in June 1967 1M39, a Perth to Birmingham express, is heading south. The train is hauled by green-liveried Brush Type 4 No D1849. On 30 June 1967, near Upwey Wishing Well Halt, a Weymouth to Bristol parcels train is hauled by green-liveried, Bristol Bath Road-allocated ‘Hymek’ No D7009. The locomotive was withdrawn in May 1973 and scrapped at Swindon the following year. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

In May 1967, green-liveried BRCW Type 3 No D6524 hauls a freight bound for Eastleigh through the New Forest near Brockenhurst. The locomotive became No 33016 in March 1974 and was withdrawn in October 1989. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

On the approach to Cheltenham in August 1964 a ‘Peak’ class diesel, No D15, with a Newcastle to Bristol service (1V39). These cross country services were the domain of this class for many years. You would be lucky to get a five car Voyageur these days. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

In September 1963, passengers are queuing to board the Drewry cars which were the motive power on the Ryde Pier tramway. Although closed in 1969, the remains of the tramway remain to this day. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

M7 0-4-4T No 30053, entering Ashurst station in June 1963, with a push-pull train from Oxted to Tunbridge Wells West, is one of only two survivors of its class. Initially preserved in the USA, it was repatriated in 1987 and is now on the Swanage Railway, it also features on this book's front cover.

Standing alongside an EE Type 3 (later Class 37) diesel at Liverpool Street station in February 1963 is a brand new EMU (Class AM9) sporting BR maroon carriage livery and displaying the original ‘wrap-around’ cab windows. I don't think I've ever seen a picture of one of those units in maroon before.

Phil Tatt was also a great tramway enthusiast. He went to Swansea in the autumn of 1959 to photograph the Swansea & Mumbles Railway, the year before closure, to record the large bogie cars which operated the service. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

Built at Derby in 1956, this two-car DMU was converted into a battery electric multiple-unit at Cowlairs works, with lead acid batteries and Siemens electrical equipment. Seen at Aberdeen, it waits to depart for its journey along the highly scenic 43½ mile Deeside branch to Ballater in April 1958.

Fairburn LMS designed 2-6-4T No 42091, built at Brighton in 1951, is depicted in 1958 at East Grinstead High Level station. The train is standing at platform 6 and is probably operating a Victoria to Tunbridge Wells West service via Oxted. crecy.co.uk/product/rail...

In September 1965, a goods for Ventnor was recorded near Smallbrook Junction headed by O2 class 0-4-4T W20 Shanklin. Some goods trains continued to run on the Isle of Wight until the Autumn of 1966, the two wagons on this working seem to be carrying coal.

On 28 January 1967, two Jinties, Nos 47289 and 47629 take a coal train out of the yard at Williamthorpe Colliery near Chesterfield. Can anyone suggest why some of the wagons are sheeted over, something I don't think I've seen before on a rake of coal wagons. What had to be kept dry?

There is the usual comprehensive coverage of the Heritage sector in abc Rail Guide. Looking at the numbers, the preservation of non steam era traction is quite remarkable. Pilot scheme Class 26 D5314, now 68 years old, waits to leave Bridge of Dun with a service to Brechin on 2 August 2024.
