hi friends I'm very excited to announce Halfspace, my experimental cross-platform IDE for solid modeling with distance fields! This has been in progress since midway through last year, and it's finally "done enough" to make it more public.

subtyping is often framed as intersection typing,,, but suffers from the diamond inheritence problems (usually) {subtyping ≅ logical implication ≅ inheritence} if you model your types as constraints, this extends arbitrarily {constraints ≅ logical conjunction (AND, ∧)}

Zachary 🦋 @zed.earth · 18/09/2026
Refinement types are a form of "intersection typing" If you consider types as constraints on some universe - and you have multiple constraints -> then the intersection of those "refinement" constraints describe the universe of that "intersection type"/refinement see: LiquidHaskell, for example

As a PL designer, this space is one of the most unclear/undecided as to what are the “correct” semantics. This one deserves some first principles drawing board and hammock time

I’ve alway’s thought it’s a shame that WebAssembly has the word “web” in it. Gives it a connotation that it’s “only for browsers” or something.

 Meanwhile, NASA’s over here with a flight-compliant derivative (SpaceWASM) intended for spacecraft!

Katharine McCormick: a most consequential yet historically overlooked woman of the 20th century. She funded the development of the world’s first oral contraceptive pill & drove progress across 3 fronts: her scientific education (MIT), militant suffragist action & backing mental health studies. 1/2🧵
A beautiful black-and-white portrait of Katharine Dexter McCormick (1875–1967), the pioneering MIT biologist, suffragist, and philanthropist who single-handedly bankrolled the development of the world's first oral contraceptive pill. Set against a soft, featureless, neutral studio backdrop, the composition focuses tightly on her upper torso and face. She looks directly forward with a solemn, intense, and piercing gaze, her features composed in a serious expression. McCormick wears an elaborate, wide-brimmed dark hat adorned with a thick, light-colored decorative band across the base of the crown. Her dark, voluminous curls cascade and blend with a highly textured, thick fur or feather boa wrapped high around her neck and shoulders. Underneath, a glimpse of a fine lace or embroidered white garment is visible. The soft vintage lighting casts gentle shadows across her face, accentuating a mood of quiet determination, dignity, and historical consequence.

#ResistanceRoots Tye Leung Schulze was born on this day in 1887 in San Francisco. She became the first Chinese American woman to vote in a U.S. election and the first to be employed by the federal government. She dedicated her life to serving the Chinese community that had once ostracized her. /1
Tye Leung Schulze. She was a fearless trailblazer who cracked open the doors of American democracy and public service for Asian American women. Standing barely four feet tall, she spent her entire life stepping into rooms built for people twice her size, using her voice to dismantle racial and gender barriers. As the first Chinese American woman to pass the federal civil service exam and the first to vote in a U.S. election, she shattered the myth that Asian American women were passive outsiders. Her marriage to Charles Schulze was a radical act of love that challenged California’s systemic white supremacy. Her most enduring legacy is found on the streets of San Francisco’s Chinatown. For more than 60 years, she was a community anchor. She gave a voice to the voiceless, proving that the true measure of a citizen is how fiercely they protect the vulnerable. there is no such thing as "age verification." All "age verification" is actually "identity verification." You can coat it in glitter and "privacy-preserving" wrapping paper. But in the end, mandating age verification means mandating surveillance be built into software and hardware. Period.

Reflection — such an important topic. Excellently produced and presented. I love the historical contexts. Also, JVM is S-tier as far as Reflection goes... most JVM languages/programers, unfortunately, treat more as a static compilation target. Probably an erlang/OTP sitting somewhere in there...

i’m obsessed with this very specific genre of photo
A color photograph looking outward through the interior of a spacecraft toward a thin crescent Earth suspended in space. Dark structural elements of the spacecraft frame the view, with the window opening forming an irregular border around the planet. The illuminated crescent floats near the center of the image against a deep black sky. Reflections from the spacecraft interior and faint alignment markings are visible on the window, emphasizing that the photograph was taken from inside the spacecraft.A color photograph of Earth’s curved horizon viewed through a circular spacecraft window. The dark window frame creates a round border around the scene, while Earth’s blue atmosphere, white cloud systems, and sunlit surface occupy the lower left portion of the view. The upper right portion fades into the blackness of space with a single bright point of light visible beyond Earth’s limb. The composition highlights both the spacecraft window and the planet beyond it.A color photograph showing the silhouette of Christina Koch inside a spacecraft looking toward Earth through a window. The astronaut’s profile appears in shadow on the left side of the image, with strands of hair illuminated by sunlight. Beyond the window, Earth fills much of the background with vivid blue oceans, swirling white clouds, and part of the African continent visible. The dark spacecraft interior frames the bright view outside, emphasizing the contrast between the cabin and the planet beyond.A color photograph of a half-illuminated Moon viewed through a spacecraft window. The thick, multi-layered window frame surrounds the left and lower edges of the image, with alternating white, black, and reddish sealing rings visible around the glass. The cratered lunar surface is sharply lit against the blackness of space and appears centered in the window. A smaller, bright crescent Earth is visible near the right edge of the frame, while scattered stars and a few small reflections on the window glass appear throughout the dark background.

#ResistanceRoots Mina Rees was born on this day in 1902 in Cleveland, Ohio. She was a mathematician and academic leader who overcame sexism to shape the landscape of modern computing. Her contributions played a key role in early computer development, laying the foundation for modern technology. /1
Mina Rees. Throughout her groundbreaking career, she faced systemic institutional sexism and frequent professional devaluation. She rarely complained publicly about the gender barriers of her era, but she was a highly effective tactical advocate for other women in STEM fields. She used her immense institutional power, administrative leverage and academic positions to systematically dismantle barriers for women in mathematics and computing.
