You actually should read the YouTube comments on historical documentaries nowadays, as a lot of older people who lived through these events are online and have fascinating things to say about them:

What a memory hit, I was born 1938 in Berlin.
Seems almost like yesterday, bombed in the early 1941 by the British and 1944 big time by the U.S. Air-force. Stormed by the Russian infantry shooting at every thing that moved. I remember cleaning brick from the bombed out Ruins, and straightening out nails pulled from wood beams debris.
I have been living in California for 63 years and I love it, let's hope we will never have a full blown
3 ra W.W.

I'm pleased to note that you found happiness in the United States. I too remember the destruction of Liverpool England, during the heavy bombing raids conducted by the German Luftwaffe, forcing my family to spend many desperate sleepless nights in the protection of air raid shelters. The devastation and loss of civilian life was enormous.
I too live in this wonderful country where I've found so much joy. I often equate living in the United States to winning the lottery, which consisted of emigrating from Great Britain, meeting my wonderful wife, starting my family, owning my own business and living the American dream. I'm blessed.

After the war my grandad went to Berlin on the behalf of a Pakistani Aid to Germany in 1950s he met a girl named Elsa eventually they fell in love with each other and got married her name was Elsa and together they came to Pakistan and she lived all her life in Pakistan. She used to tell us about the horrors of destroyed Berlin and she always used to get emotional when she told her stories about war and life in post-war Germany.
What a feat the Germans again build the germany that's why l'm proud of my ancestry and my grandmother's home country

My brother was born juli 4h 1945 in Berlin. I was born 1951 & I still played in the ruins. My grandmother raised rabbits on her balcony. She also foraged for edible plants. I still have pictures of my mother & grandmother with my brother holding rabbits. When my mother was pregnant, she & many woman got trapped in the school house by the Russians. My mother actually got saved by a Russian officer from being raped. My mother feared the Russians until she past away.
My father was insured & lost 2 brothers in Russia. To me its unimaginable what my family went through during the war in Berlin.

Reposting this from Tumblr myself because otherwise people will be posting it tomorrow and other people will be asking if I said it.

Q:Some of your books make it seems like you believe in actual literal magic, do you? ()
A: I can write down a few words and make people thousands of miles away, whom I have never met and will never meet, laugh tears of joy and cry tears of true sorrow for people who do not exist and have never existed and never will exist. If that isn't actual literal magic I don't know what is.

I loved this and wanted to create a little comic for it. This is how I imagined the exchange going. I hope you like it @neilhimself.neilgaiman.com ☺️

One page comic.

Panel one: Neil Gaiman is sitting in a chair reading, and his son, who is wearing a cape, says proudly, “If you need me…”

Panel two: the some finishes his sentence as he walks away saying, “I’ll be in my mind.”

Full page: the boy is in a crash of waves with a water dragon behind him. A sense of adventure.

Final panel: Neil is smiling as his son plays in a cardboard box, pretending to be in the sea.

Funny to see many people arguing that (1) no one cares about decentralization/federation and (2) how awful it is that twitter and reddit have been destroyed by ridiculous CEOs. (1) helps prevent (2).

Humans already have a bias for being less critical of claims made by their in-group than their out-group, demanding more evidence for the latter than the former. The way social media tricks us into overestimating the size of our in-group makes that worse.

This assuming a small slice of the community is representative of the whole further tricks us into think that opinions and arguments accepted by our small community are widely accepted, as well. We think "*everybody* knows this" when, instead, it's only "known" in our tiny circle.

Censorship resistant internet access 🤝 censorship resistant money 🤝 censorship resistant social communication. Sadly, most people don't care about these things until they need them or their friends or family needs them. It's up to us to help with education on TOR, Bitcoin, and Nostr.

Question: what is keeping so many people from changing from bsky.social to URLs they own? 1) Fear of losing that bsky.social name? 2) Fear of someone pretending to be them if they lose the bsky.social name? 3) Don't own any domain names? 4) Indecision? 5) Too technical to add a txt file to the DNS?
