OpenAI’s faster Fourier transform is less a mathematical breakthrough and more a malicious exploit of mathematical traditions.

Funny. And a great title. You might not want the controversy but both Mississippi and the Pacific deserve it more than the other smaller rivers and seas

To each, his/her own. But to compare Atlanta and western NC is just dumb. Are there any jobs there? Young people? Good healthcare? Will you go to Charlotte or Atlanta when you get seriously sick? www.ajc.com/politics/202...

Cathy Woolard, the consummate Atlantan, has left Atlanta for good
Cathy Woolard, former Atlanta City Council president, has relocated to North Carolina because of Atlanta's traffic, taxes and affordability. "I never thought I'd leave."

Historians rightly say people's actions should be judged by the standards of their time. But what often gets lost is that those standards weren't what we think. Many 18thc Europeans hated colonialism--as an e.g., here's Immanuel Kant in 1795 castigating it as "truly appalling." It was contentious...
"Excerpt from Kant: "If one compares this with the inhospitable conduct of the civilized—and primarily commercial—states of our own continent, the injustice they display when visiting foreign lands and peoples (which they equate with conquering them) is truly appalling. To them, upon their discovery, America, the lands of the Negroes, the Spice Islands, the Cape, and so forth, were territories belonging to no one; for they counted the inhabitants as nothing. In the East Indies (Hindustan), under the pretext of merely establishing trading posts, they introduced foreign military forces—bringing with them the oppression of the natives, the incitement of the region's various states into widespread wars, famine, insurrection, treachery, and the whole litany of evils that afflict the human race.

China and Japan (Nippon)—having had experience with such guests—wisely restricted access: the former permitted entry but not full admission, while the latter granted even that limited access to only a single European nation, the Dutch, whom they nonetheless kept isolated from the native population, much like prisoners."

One of the things we have lost is the power to shame public officials. It seems quaint but it is actually very important. Without it, formal law is significantly weaker and our lives are significantly poorer. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/26/u...

It's worth reiterating every time the Trump regime performs one of these murders that they are murders, wholly illegal, & everyone in the chain of command from the president on down to the officers who fired the weapons should be prosecuted for their crimes in aiding & abetting the murders.

So, Park Police did this. They were hi-speed chasing someone who was ON FOOT and they rammed into a civilian vehicle absolutely destroying it, crashing through a stop sign, another parked car, over the sidewalk, through a home's fence and retaining wall and into their front yard. At 13th & MD NE.

What I especially appreciate about this is that it shows how this is a familiar story: negligent decisionmakers crafting elaborate stories to avoid accountability. We don't need to wait for new tools, committees, or institutions to address that.
