When people lament that Apple is 'slow to AI' just remember that they are perhaps the only remaining large tech company that would be embarrassed to deliver such a shitty product.

This makes me angry, to see one of the world's leading scientists essentially shut down like this due to politics. And as a Tulane alum, it makes me even a bit angrier. What a disgrace.

This is so good "When goals overtake experience, you lose the freedom to encounter your life as it happens. And when you lose that ability, you are no longer living in full. We used to optimize work so we could do everything else. Now we optimize life as though living were another job."

Amazing story about how it looks like the Trump administration may have fixed the National Civics Contest for high-school kids to prevent Aangad Singh, “the brown kid in the turban,” from winning.

Suspicion and Doubt at the National Civics Contest

Alright, I'm willing to say it. The Cavs made a mistake when they drafted Mobley ahead of Scottie Barnes. If they had drafted Barnes and kept Hartenstein ... they could have had a higher ceiling for sure.

is that bad? "The contract provisions...allow wealthy donors with business before the federal government to contribute anonymously to a sitting president’s pet project, while exempting the White House from key conflict of interest safeguards and limiting scrutiny by Congress and the public."

Trump fought to keep the ballroom fundraising contract secret. Here’s what’s in it.
The agreement governing hundreds of millions in private donations was kept secret until a watchdog group sued and a judge ordered it disclosed.

Once it was clear that US armed forces could not open the Strait militarily, we decided to take credit for the fact that it was closed. An absolutely critical waterway in the global economy is stuck in the “You can’t fire me, I QUIT!” stage of imbecile behavior. And we are the imbeciles. Great 😔

Why is the team with the 41 year old LeBron James - the guy that consistently picks apart a half court defense after undersized defenders attempt to cover him in the post - trying to RUN RUN RUN and turning the ball over carelessly? Save the legs, and the possessions, by SLOWING DOWN

So it is abundantly clear that the cease-fire 'deal' was more a project of imagination / face-saving than an actual agreement, yet the market has not reflected this quite yet. Is the stock market bounce reflecting the fact that the US may just claim victory and walk away? Seems like what's going on.

Absolutely loved the Chernow biography of Grant and came away with an entirely new appreciation for him. An incredible man. A flawed man, but an incredible man nonetheless. In fact his flaws made him even more incredible, in a way.

Of course. The countries getting bombed by Iran as a consequence of this war are not going to immediately agree to a peace deal and start paying a toll to use the strait because … that’s called losing. You clearly lost if you do that.

I’m thinking that the extremely rich petrostates are not going to tolerate a world where they hand millions of dollars per year to Iran so they can sail through the Strait of Hormuz. But will they act independently? Seems not.

Electricity costs at my home (~0.18 per kwh) have now risen to the point that the operating costs of a similarly-sized hybrid are very, very close to that of my Bolt EUV. Even if gas is ~$3.50 or so forever. Headwinds against EV adoption are obviously much more substantial if electricity is pricy

Electricity prices are essential to the US economy. But it’s very hard to get recent, granular data on them. We’re changing that. Today, @heatmap.news and MIT released the ELECTRICITY PRICE HUB, a new tool breaking down local power rates and bills going back to 2021. electricity.heatmap.news
A choropleth map of U.S. residential electricity bills by state as of March 2026, from the MIT/Heatmap Electricity Price Hub. States are shaded from green (lowest, ~$70/month) to red (highest, ~$198/month). Texas, Alabama, and South Carolina appear among the most expensive; Colorado and surrounding Rocky Mountain states appear among the cheapest. A timeline slider spans 2020–2026. Below the map, a chart shows the national average bill oscillating between roughly $100–$200/month with strong seasonality. A summary statistic shows the national average residential electricity bill rose 28.0% from March 2021 to March 2026 (12-month trailing average).

We aren't stressing enough how the lack of a plan - ANY PLAN - for the Straight of Hormuz is the most obvious blunder in the history of modern warfare. Why does Hegseth still have a job? Why aren't members of both parties asking for his head on a spike?

Zack @zachary.mba · 01/04/2026
If the US is this quickly running low on the preferred munitions to strike a second or third rate military, the level of waste, fraud and abuse within our military-industrial complex must be Soviet in scale. This is an armed forces that’s nearly half of global defense spending. 4 weeks w/Iran?!

So Pakistan (!) is securing safe passage of ships while in negotiations with Iranians & Trump is just taking credit for it huh? The same Pakistan is going to broker peace talks between 1) the country releasing oil to them and 2) the country that's a massive pain in the ass to both themselves & Iran?

i know i posted this yesterday, but i need to post it again. jay bhattacharya's immediate reaction to the CDC shooting was to repeat more anti-vaccine lies in the media — the very same lies that led to the attack.
Kennedy's appointees have gone even further. In 2022, the National Institutes of Health's now-Director Jay Bhattacharya appeared on a panel that inaccurately claimed Covid-19 vaccines had killed 20 times as many people as they had saved. The day after the shooting, Bhattacharya went on Steve Bannon's podcast to criticize mRNA vaccines. A few days later, he doubled down in a Washington Post op-ed.
