NEW: What happened in Holborn? Some constituency polling to help us understand a bit more. TLDR: loyalty to Burnham + a local candidate won the day; no real sign of tactical voting; Greens never convinced ppl they could win but Polanski not toxic necessarily. @persuasionuk.bsky.social

Trump’s obsession with demonizing the Somali community is dangerous and reprehensible. Hate to break it to him: Somali Minnesotans are resilient. We will not let Trump intimidate us. Our neighbors have our back.

This is obviously horrific reasoning start to finish. Also, “we r a completely different country from 50yrs ago” is a standard and healthy thing. Something would have to have gone seriously wrong if it was not the case.

Does owning tweed coats makes one mid-30s coded, asking… ummm, for a friend?

Think a part of me will always be angry at what they tried to do in Minneapolis. Unforgivable things done to a beautiful city.

I mean, this does go quite high and is quite serious in that the new bank note is a tool against counterfeiting. Which he could find out by going to the FAQ section of the BoE website. Had he done that, he could also have voted for historical figures to be on the bank notes again.

So is the logic here that the greens r the natural party for that part of London? And Labour can only retain it by becoming the greens? Even though the greens have never had an MP there????

“This may seem trivial. But it’s really not.” I mean, yes. The BoE is doing this for a very consequential reason: to reduce counterfeiting. Or does he just like forgery?

Ah yes, because PRC is famous for its steadfast support for trans teens. (This is a joke just to be clear. Unfortunately, I have met people who unironically believe this.)

A similar moment for me: a person I work with at a charity shop, progressive but not at all political, told someone they were warm and personable, “like that Andy Burnham guy.”

A super important topic, I don't think gets enough attention: Are we spending public money on social and affordable housing where it is needed most. Answer - no. But we have in the past, and can do so again. 🧵

On the one hand, this would backfire for him in the midterms. On the other hand, it would reduce the well being of, like, everyone on this planet.

The NSF is in almost every book about science/innovation as a positive case study. Decent chance it will be in books to come as a case study of tragedy.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

I know nobody would want to read this. But one of those days I really want to start a thread on all the Freida McFadden books I read. She writes like 4 a yr, and they r so mental in a unique way that I actually think AI cannot produce.

Richard Osman confirming the existence of Freida McFadeen in his in-book universe feels wrong. Like I get they r both crime authors and should definitely have at least heard of each other. But they r so different that they just do not mix in my head.

Like some of the current U.S. comments about foreign countries feel very “Lu Shaye with American characteristics.”

Think a key dynamic of these mayoral election is that the candidates r meant to have a bit of their own brand/policies on top of the party. I mean, just look at the current PM. If she cannot let Cleverly do his own thing, then this could be a longer-term issue with other mayoral candidates too.

I feel like demonising a community and the hardship they may face as a “no-go zone” is also not good for “integration.” Like, a country cannot punish and stereotype its way into stronger community cohesion.

Every time I picture that voter, I think of someone who graduated from their uni, having had a good time, and who now works in a service-based tradeable industry. And somehow there is a red line from the Tory party against every one of those words.

Many successful people on this country work at a desk job, often wear lanyards and may be ethnic minorities, all things I am sure they r not gonna be odd about.

It is also just a complete misunderstanding of dynamism as an indicator. The policy question is to understand how to create more and better jobs to enable mobility and dynamism. It is not to pump up dynamism on its own. He is getting the cause and effect wrong!

Yunze Wang @yz18.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
It is also, the idea is that these people find better and more suitable jobs in a mobile labour market. In our current labour market, I am not entirely sure more unemployment means stronger job mobility, and remind me what Syed thinks about social safety net again?

Yunze Wang @yz18.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Also dynamism should be a means to an end. When dynamism is low, it raises policy questions of what can encourage more and better jobs and businesses. U should not just chase dynamism as a KPI, and definitely not through more bankruptcy and unemployment.
010
Yunze Wang @yz18.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
So I think what he is alluding to is our business dynamism, which is lower than it used to be But the idea of dynamism is that people find more suitable jobs, and stronger businesses replace weaker ones. If u skip the “creative” part of creative destruction, the results r, well, destructive.

Yunze Wang @yz18.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I think someone read creative destruction but skipped the chapter on the “creative” part.

Yunze Wang @yz18.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I think what is odd is that many of the criticisms r not “he picked the wrong side on an issue” but “why did he pick a side.” It’s literally the job of a PM! And the grumbling about the end of Labour is a bit “do u remember the polling a few months ago?”

The right spent close to a decade accusing left/liberal people of ruining fun with DEI and PC, and now they want people to work through one drop rule math in ur head while watching sports.

Having said that, it’s more common in the UK partially because the primary system gives the GOP base the chance to reject minority candidates out of racism, which they often do.

In some ways, a testament to integration is that people of immigrant descent reflect the same ideological diversity as the general public. Unfortunately, that includes some questionable ideologies.

By official data, several major cities have had workforce decline since COVID, by as much as 10%! Not saying it was never possible. But surely something to have double checked on before publishing it.
