Tonight's CBPA vote highlights a quirk of the new system that the public is probably going to have to adjust to - going into executive session, then coming out of executive session and taking a secret vote on an item. It's a different vibe, to be sure.

Normally you'd feel a bit of relief at this moment, or satisfaction. But that's hard to do when nine of my colleagues and dozens of my colleagues at the City are losing their jobs. That's hard to do when 600,000 Portlanders are losing the services that those people provide.

I am proud of the work that I did and immensely grateful for the wins that we achieved this year, both at the City and at the County - and to the electeds who helped us achieve those wins (and candidly, that's all of them). But I am profoundly disappointed in this process.

Volunteering on a Community Budget Advisory Committee is one of the easiest - and least painful - ways to participate in local government. If you're curious about budgets and want get more involved, this is a great opportunity. As Terry said, either of us are happy to talk with you.

Although, sadly, not every non-repped position. And thanks to the vagaries of bumping rights, not every incumbent in those positions. I take every one of those losses really seriously. Still, this is a far better outcome than the City... or my own union.

This is my second year volunteering with Multnomah County Department of Community Services, and I'm really proud that (thanks to the hard work of DCS staff + the partnership of the County Commissioners) we were able to save every filled union position in DCS, this year.

I'll note that Metro Councilors typically attend all of our committee AND subcommittee (!!) meetings, so they have far greater day-to-day understanding of our work, too. Volunteering can actually be fun in other jurisdictions!

Metro is so funny - everywhere else committee appointments are increasingly political, but Metro is like, "Oh yeah, it seemed like you were having an ok time, so we're reappointing you. We'll just put you on the consent agenda whenever."

Of interest to the keen-eyed is that CBPA (in the absence of an OCPA director to do hiring into the OCPA) recently authorized funds to hire staff to do CBPA work out of City Ops. Those were pitched as external recruitments, but I'd assume that laid off union staff will likely just bump into them?
