I would pay good money to have Jed and Maurissa doing a Coulson eternal recurrence/return for the MCU. And I want the harbinger to be a one-shot of his continued evasion of an increasingly baffled and frustrated Rio Vidal.

Or this one: a monolingual Anglophone nurse hears a patient speaking unintelligibly, assume it's delirium, until an L2 English speaking nurse recognises the language. The dying person isn't babbling; they've reverted to a mother tongue at the end of life.

Why I do what I do: met a former palliative care nurse & was describing how devout Muslims can hold up a single finger to represent the Shahadah if they're unable to speak. She'd never heard of this. "I wonder how many times nurses see this, think someone is agitated, and drug them."

There's something almost funny about how sometimes it's easier for L1 users of other Englishes and L2 English users to get a clearer (and more analytic) sense of that ontological conflation.

Yael Peled @ypeled.bsky.social · 03/08/2025
Exactly. And, paradoxically, this very much goes back to the kind of sneaky conflation of very different types of "we" in the kind of professional English in question. Is it the editorial one? The authorial one? The generic one? The pseudo-inclusive one?

So much to say... but also so much still to investigate, to move away from arbitrary personal convictions imposed as authoritative, to a more systematic framework that can help colleagues not just understand the injustices/inequities, but also what pragmatic and best practices could be implemented.

SUBJECT:
IMPLEMENTATION OF EXECUTIVE ORDER NO. 14,224:
DESIGNATING ENGLISH AS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
I. INTRODUCTION
As President Trump recognized in his Executive Order No. 14,224, 90 Fed. Reg. 11363 (Mar. 6, 2025) (Executive Order 14,224), it is in America's best interest for the federal government to have one official language: English.' A shared language binds Americans together, transcending different backgrounds to create a common foundation for public discourse, government operations, and civic life, while leaving ample room for the vibrant linguistic diversity that thrives in private and community spheres. This policy streamlines federal processes ensuring forms, notices, websites, and advisories are consistent, clear, and cost-effective thus reducing administrative burdens and enhancing operational efficiency
