Getting a bit sick of the narrative that Chelsea FC received a lenient punishment because they self-reported. Many of the offshore payments exposed by the Guardian and media partners were not self-reported (possibly because the new owners didn't know, although we can't be sure of that).

Manchester City cheated Premier League rules, the Commission found. Did it also cheat HMRC? We've examined the decision and leaked Mancini documents. We think City likely failed to pay £12m in tax. There should be a criminal investigation. Thread:

Tells you a lot about football in England that City could only break into the red cartel in that particular decade by industrial scale cheating. The game is that fucking rigged This doesn't excuse what City bosses did, of course, but this should be trigger for changes that make the league fairer

I think this will be one of the defining images of the Premier League's void years: a proudly working class fanbase celebrating that the ruling family of an oppressive regime had hired a barrister on £10,000-an-hour to try and prevent them suffering consequences for their cheating. Embarrassing.

A club guilty of a decade-long scheme to submit false financial information to the league, for the purpose of securing an unfair on-field advantage, should not only be thrown out of the league and have all its titles vacated, its owner should be compelled to sell the club.
