It still amazes me that we’ve basically let ourselves be manipulated into buying, and even defending, that THIS is what “freedom” looks like. Dependency is never freedom. Freedom is having real choices. #cardependency

I think it's pretty remarkable how, despite the trillions of dollars we've spent and the century of constant campaigning we've been subjected to in order convince us otherwise, some part of us *still knows* that car dependency is a terrible way to live, and most people still don't want it.

Cars have WILDLY changed expectations for speed of everyday mobility. When cities started implementing speed limits c.1900, the cyclist in this scenario would have been exceeding common limits by >100%. Now everyone is supposed to get out of the way so cars can go at least 25mph on all city streets.

Every sidewalk bicyclist is a vote for protected bike lanes.
A muddy patch in a sidewalk, with lots of bicycle tire tracks, next to a six-lane divided state highway with a 40 mph speed limit sign. On the other side of the sidewalk is a berm and a low sound wall to protect people in a residential area from the effects of cars that aren't theirs.

This is how. Greta Thunberg spits fire and gives you the only media training you may ever need.
Reporter: How did the Israelis treat you, we saw them giving sandwiches?
Greta Thunberg: They probably have posted lots of PR stunts, they did an illegal act by kidnapping us in international waters but that’s not the real story here. The real story is the genocide in Gaza and systematic starvation.
Reporter: Are you worried about the others?
Greta: Yes…I’m calling for everyone who can to mobilize to demand their immediate release and, of course, to demand not only humanitarian aid being let into Gaza but also a ceasefire and most importantly an end to the occupation, an end to the systemic oppression and violence that Palestinians are facing on an everyday basis.
Reporter: “Why do you think so many countries and governments around the world are just ignoring what’s happening in Gaza?”
Greta Thunberg: “Because of racism.”

Don’t forget why change is so hard to discuss, in city-building, or in anything. Study after study shows we’re actually wired to be “loss averse”— the idea of losing something bothers us twice as much as gaining something equal makes us happy. But there’s loss in being stuck in a costly status quo.
