Autistic researcher with too many interests and no real intention of narrowing it down. Mostly AAC research at the moment. Sometimes a math teacher. Not speaking on behalf of any companies/organizations here.

My Judaica publisher told me rabbis keep filling his Talmud margins so I asked how many margins he has and he said he just goes to print and adds wider margins afterwards so I said it sounds like he’s just feeding whitespace to rabbis and then his printer started crying.

I've made them sit in the awkward of trying and failing to discuss for several minutes and then said "Ok so those of you who DID read, talk on this side of the room. Those of you who didn't, start reading on this side."

MEANWHILE, in Canada, meet Brady Rogers, the reluctant politician who's fed up and thinks he can do better. His sign says "I barely want to do this." His website says, "I guess I'm running for Kelowna city council." His business? Recycling plastic into cool things.
lawn sign with a grumpy man in a "DADLIFE" sweatshirt and the sign says "I barely want to do this" with his name and campaignHi, I’m Brady.
Do I enjoy politics? No.

Do I know what I’m doing? No.

But am I qualified? Also no.

I was born in Williams Lake and raised in Kelowna since I was 10. These are the streets I biked every day, the cars I threw crab apples at (sorry), and the parks I played in. Seeing this city grow has been cool, but with growth has come a whole new spectrum of challenges. Running for council is the last thing I saw myself doing this year. I don’t like meetings, I don’t like having to be certain places at certain times, and I’m allergic to stuffy offices. But unfortunately, I happen to like Kelowna, and think I can help do some good.I guess I’m running for Kelowna city council.
Support the campaignI graduated from UBCO in 2015ish (long story) and worked for 4 years as a robotic automation engineer. As cool as the job was, it was soulless, and I wanted to use my abilities for more than just helping huge companies save money.

Since 2019, I’ve been building The Rogerie.
Starting as a farmers market booth beside the mall, my wife and I began turning plastic waste into new products in our laundry room. Seven painful years later, and we have a pretty awesome shop downtown by Sprout (come check it out!) where you’ll find me just about every day.

Have at! (If you do, may I see it when it's done? This feels like a fun kind of artistic collaboration and I've actually done it before -- the book that had its cover done that way is sadly out of print but it was cool to do.)

Personally for me, yes, though I think that's largely because ow how much overlap there is between the neurodivergence spaces I'm in and also the queer spaces I'm in. There's just a lot of overlap for me. #AutChat A3

Also it doesn't have to be an autistic thing but it feels autistic to me that *my* pipeline for digital scans is: 1) Scan greyscale 2) Turn black and white using k-means clustering in MATLAB 3) Manual clean-up in js.paint (formerly ms paint)

#AutChat I don't know what question to put this on if any but I draw intricate geometric designs on dot paper. (Faint dots mostly don't show up in scans.) When I mostly-but-not-100% jokingly answer "what are you drawing?" with "autism" that's pride -- that the cool parts are ALSO #Autistic. #art

A1: To me Autistic pride is a direct counter to the shame that gets taught (both intentionally and not) when the ways we're disabled and the ways we're odd get treated as wrong. Autistic pride: I *like* being who I am, even when it's hard. #AutChat

Findings about structural changes are wildly inconsistent; those have definitely ever been found but not necessarily reproduced (and sometimes we get differences in opposite directions in different studies...)

I think part of why the old-school autism researchers are frustrated by the rise in diagnoses is bc they can't separate the disabling comorbidities of autism from the baseline cognitive styles of autism, and because they think of it as a linear spectrum of disability instead of spokes in a wheel

We argued against them for those reasons. I don't think it's true that we really got rid of them because professionals, researchers, and grievance parents (which is not all parents or we wouldn't need the adjective) kept using them + variants. (E.g. profound.)

I am prepared to throw my PhD in neuroscience behind "There is no single aspect of the human brain where a binary categorization truly applies." What to *do* re: named neurotypes, deficit-focused definitions, and support needs is harder. Inappropriate dimensionality reduction isn't the answer.

The AI industry wants you to say "the AI just did that thing on its own!" Like, United Health's AI that's denying a shitload of claims with a 90% error rate? They wanted you to think it's just the AI.
