I finally ordered myself a proper USB OBD2 reader though, so I can plug my laptop running FORScan into it. You know, I just fucking refuse to pay the dealership $250 to have some service manager plug a tablet in for 3 minutes and say "yeah, it was a transient voltage drop, probably nothing."

My new car threw an obnoxiously vague "vehicle malfunction detected, have inspected by dealer" message. My current OBD2 reader can only see engine and transmission modules, but those were clear of codes. I suspect a transient sensor blip or a hot differential.

I've also got an above-average amount of storage in Google for free thanks to decades of promotional "do this thing to get some extra free storage for life" type stuff, and a LOT of my old photos were taken on Nexus/Pixel phones in the free photo storage for life era.

I also find their desktop app to be the best and most useful/versatile of all the cloud storage providers, and it's not even close. Being able to just sync arbitrary folders sans fighting their opinions of what should be synced, AND sync exclusion rules? Amazing. Even the OS support is broad.

That's the one cloud storage I pay for. $70/year for a Mega plan to back up anything on my NAS that is truly in the "cannot be allowed to be lost" category.

Yeah. Running your own servers for stuff like that is great. If you haven't already I would recommend putting some thought into disaster recovery, like where things are backed up if the NAS fails (or your house burns down or whatever).

There are privacy-conscious ways to keep data somewhere other than your house by paying for cloud storage, and in my experience that $70/year is worth the extra work it would be to try to keep an offsite backup at work or something (never mind the cost of buying more hardware for offsite backup).

I also keep all my stuff locally on a file server in my living room, BUT it's set up with redundancy so that a failed drive doesn't lose anything. AND on top of that I do still pay Mega $70/year for somewhere off-site to sync my truly irreplaceable files.
