Writing guides, such as the Author Training Manual, suggest you should have a platform, even as a fiction author, to get published. How does one create a platform if the reason anyone would follow an author is their writing, which, because they are unpublished, people won't know about?

If you are a writer, lamenting that #pitdark isn't happening here, post your pitch, even if you post elsewhere, too. It might not have an impact today, but on the next cycle… We can't overcome the network effects of twitter without a concerted effort. A little intransigence goes a long way.

The Long Tail is far from dead. As with most technology, innovators focused on the pros, ignoring the cons. The long tail has another part: the fat head. What companies like Netflix have been doing is chopping off the long tail, because it is unprofitable, and feeding off the fat head.
