I really enjoyed challenging myself with this last year, so I'm back for another Rectober! I'll be reccing one fic a day for the month of October, with each fic meeting the theme of Halloween in some way.

forever picking away at doomed yaoi yunwoo (when i'm not getting distracted by yuriteez...)

The scenery opened up in front of them suddenly over a steep incline, the street a dip down to a row of beach-front houses and a playground and beyond, the frothy glass mirror of the ocean, stretched glittering with reflected light and out into the dark nothing. Wooyoung stopped and took a deep breath. Yunho, carried by momentum, stopped a few steps further down the hill and turned back to look at him.

There was a street lamp a few paces up, half shaded by a tall tree. The spill of butter yellow light lit up Wooyoung’s shape in a way that made Yunho’s fingers itch, suddenly, for his camera.

“Now that's some view," Wooyoung said. He wasn’t looking at Yunho. His eyes were caught on the horizon, the thread of silver sea foam that trailed the beach. “Never gets old.”

"Want to go, dip your feet in?” Yunho asked. Hoarse thing around an affable smile, half truth, half lie—he cleared his throat and clenched his fists around nothing when Wooyoung looked down at him and sucked his bottom lip between his teeth, expression unreadable for a moment before it smoothed into something a little cocky, a little warm and honey-dark. He stepped closer, a sway and a casual tuck of his hands into his pockets, close enough that Yunho could touch him if he dared to reach out.

"We could," he said. His voice was low, a sweet hum, a little gravel. "Or we could go to my place. It's not very far from here."

And what would we do at your place? The question sat on the tip of Yunho's tongue. A laugh, warm and friendly; easy enough to do and let Wooyoung believe that he didn't understand the implication, that understanding didn't make his palms sweat and his heart race and the crucifix around his neck feel heavy. Lead-line to the ocean floor. The phantom pressure of a velvet box tucked into the curl of his palm.

"Okay," he said.

"Okay," Wooyoung repeated after him. His eyes lit up, feverish.

For him it was tying himself, body and soul, to a coven that would unquestioningly change him. By the nature of how magic gained power, any coven Yunho bonded with would've enhanced his natural abilities, but choosing to do so here, on this beach, in this bay filled with ancient magic, whatever Yunho was about to go through had the potential to be monumental.

Hongjoong lifts his hands up, rings catching on the strobe lights, twinkling. One from his grandparents, one he stole, one he got from somewhere he doesn't remember, one he took from Mingi. It's a simple ring, smooth and silver, a little thicker than the others that adorn his fingers.

Small fingers, such small hands, Mingi's voice rings in his ears. So many nights spent together, toying with each others hands, fingers, slipping rings on and off. This one, this thick smooth silver band, fits perfectly around Mingi's pinky and sits snug against the base of Hongjoong's ring finger.

He didn't mean to take it. He asked Mingi if he wanted it back, but all he did was link their hands together and told him to keep it. Maybe to Mingi it meant Hongjoong considered getting serious about them when in reality things fell apart as quickly as they started. That was the usual between them back then.

"Seven fourty-two p.m. He can't quite remember what time he got here, can't really think back on how he arrived. His legs move him up some final steps and onto a porch where he looks back out towards the town, setting sun drowning him in warm light. Seonghwa imagines himself a giant, squatting over the houses, contorting his limbs so he can lean an ear to their roofs, listen to their heartbeats, match the rhythm of his rattling breaths to them. When he goes to reach a hand out towards the sun, it turns into a fist in his pocket, around something made of metal.
A last look at the landscape: darkness on the bottom, endless light above, Seonghwa right in the middle with a key in his pocket that wasn't there before. He knows what door it opens."

He took a swig and hummed appreciatively. It reminded him of the hyeonmi-cha his mother drank at lunch, with toasted brown bread and caramel notes. Distinctive and not too sweet, like the man who’d bought it.

Remembering his promise to send Wooyoung pictures, Yunho lifted the bottle toward the trees and snapped a photo.

“The malt’s strong in that one,” Jongho said, squinting at the label. “Where’d you find it?”

“Fox Farm in Salem.” Yunho hit send. “Wooyoung grabbed a pack for me on his way back from Woodstock last weekend.”

It had been raining when Wooyoung got back to Stoneybrook. He’d almost made it home when the Volvo stalled at a traffic light and refused to start. Yunho had come right away, armed with a toolbox and a new set of spark plugs he’d been meaning to swap out for him anyway. The next day, Wooyoung thanked him with a six-pack and a blowjob in the museum parking lot.

He’d had to get the car detailed afterward.

What an afternoon.
