Never played the game, but I know the soundtrack. Pandora recommended it to me and now I have Solar Fields on regular rotation.

With the Rayearth remake out, folks have drawn comparisons to Escaflowne and are craving a remake of that, too. Based on what? Manga? TV? Movie? All three are drastically different. Escaflowne TV is perfection. Kazuki Akane took an innane outline, chucked it, and made beauty. No follow-up needed.

Had to do that earlier this year. Honestly, the stuff didn't taste bad. Not great, but not bad. Obviously you won't be allowed to eat anything of substance during your prep, but I do recommend apple juice and light soups such as chicken broth. The procedure itself was a breeze too.

E.T. The Extra Terrestrial. My parents took me to see it when I was 3yrs old. Freaked me the hell out. It's one of my earliest memories. Honestly have never watched it since.

Where did today's anime production hellscape, with too many TV anime produced every season & a focus on initially airing them (in Japan) in late-night time slots, originate from? Well, 30 years ago exactly Those Who Hunt Elves debuted in late-night, establishing the format the defines anime today.

Here's Netflix's spec regarding Forced Narratives: partnerhelp.netflixstudios.com/hc/en-us/art... See part "II.10 - On-screen Text". - "When on-screen text and dialogue overlap, precedence should be given to the most plot-pertinent message." That worked wonders for Komi Can't Communicate. /s

Imagine you're a CR exec with bonuses tied to market share & cost efficiencies. You have a high quality human-made subtitle workflow using a non-standard format. Would switching to the common standard (or going AI) generate savings outweighing the subscriptions lost? I believe they've judged yes.

T. Williams @xstylus.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
This. We recently had to do a conform for a beloved 2007 series for a certain VOD vendor. The original subs were in ASS & we had to machete them down to SRT spec. We begged, pleaded, and even had them test alternative formats, but the VOD's renderer could not handle anything but bottom center.

T. Williams @xstylus.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Anime is a special snowflake because there's all kinds of kanji and weirdness flying at you. Also, at the time the .SRT spec became the de-facto standard, Anime was nowhere near as big as it is now.
010
T. Williams @xstylus.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Here's something most don't consider: For almost ALL other media content _except_ anime, .SRT is plenty good enough. It had one job: Translate what's spoken. The notion of needing to translate signs wasn't much of a consideration as, for most languages _except_ Asian ones, you could figure it out.

Especially for Netflix, where the spec is God. Other VOD vendors sometimes may be a wee bit more flexible, but not big red. Here's Netflix's spec, in case anyone wants to check it out for themselves: partnerhelp.netflixstudios.com/hc/en-us/art...

Yet right now, the economics just aren't favoring that, sadly.

Here's a fun story from when we were preparing a show for a now kinda-sorta-but-not-really defunct VOD channel. The reps insisted on SRT subs which were bottom-center only. We begged to let us do burn-ins. Back & forth ensured. Finally, I sent them this example. They quickly said YIKES, and agreed.

T. Williams @xstylus.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Such conforms were time consuming and costly. So I completely understand CR's desire to move away from the ASS format, much though I lament that because it means reduced quality. But unfortunately, the economics nowadays isn't favoring quality. It's favoring "good enough".

T. Williams @xstylus.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Back when we used to work with Netflix, we would have to do a "conform" that would adapt ASS subtitles to Netflix's rigid format. It was hell, because we'd have to machete a lot so as to conform to spec.

T. Williams @xstylus.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
...with rare exceptions for "force narratives" (sign translations) that can sometimes be moved top-center, so long as they don't overlap the thing it's translating. And never can the FNs be onscreen at the same time as a subtitle.

T. Williams @xstylus.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
This. I work at a studio that does subtitling. ASS is very much a special snowflake that does custom positioning that _nobody_ else supports except CR. The major VOD sites (Netflix, Amazon, iTunes) are STRICT in that all subs must primarily be bottom center...

No, SungWon is absolutely correct here. The insistence on sticking with the Japanese title when there is already a perfectly acceptable English one is utterly asinine. Nobody does this in Japanese literature, or film, or any other art form. It's just the anime nerds who insist on being obtuse.

The Ferengi were supposed to be TNG's major antagonists. It tracks, given Gene's worldview. Savage ultra-capitalism vs civil post-scarcity socialist utopia. Late in the season the writers realized they were more joke than a menace, and rightly pivoted. This vid explains really well:

Does Amazon sell the monitor? Maybe just buy a new one. Which hopefully won't be defective straight out of the box. Because that would be terribly inconvenient. But Amazon has free returns. Which is very convenient.

Saying "just buy an EV if you hate high gas prices" to poor people makes climate activists look out of touch. Those who are most impacted by high gas prices can't afford $20k+ on a vehicle and charger. I certainly can't, so let's keep that in mind before we shame people for not going electric.

Red America lives out in the country and often never set foot outside of their hometown. Smog is something they've never seen, thus a left-wing myth to them. That's okay. Once those data centers running on diesel generators out in farm country come online they'll remember why there's an EPA.
