About ⅓ of food is lost and wasted. This is from the United Nations Environment Programme: "Today, 13% of food produced is lost after harvest and before it reaches store shelves, while a staggering further 19% is wasted in our homes, supermarkets and restaurants." www.unep.org/topics/food-...

"What can you do?" Donatello says, instructively. "How about not eating so much meat in the first place?"
The image: A Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle named Donatello is eating a delicious and nutritious salad full of diverse plant-based ingredients. A genuinely happy cow munches grass in the background.

Above the image is a caption that explains: "M is for Meat.

Some animals are injected with artificial hormones to make them grow faster. But some of these hormones cause cancer. A lot of the world's cereal crop is fed to cattle, when it could be used to feed starving people instead. And cattle expel methane, a gas that makes the greenhouse effect worse."

That TMNT "Whoa! Way Cool!" is in reference to finding out about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ABC's for a Better Planet book. 🐢

"Smith also singled out cutting methane emissions as one of the quickest ways to alter the course of global heating." Yet, despite livestock emitting a lot of methane, there wasn't any direct mention of a just transition to plant-based diets as a positive "tipping point". bsky.app/profile/xoii...

Reducing food loss and waste is an important climate solution. I don't know of any data suggesting that eliminating FLW alone would "cut land use in half", without also transitioning to plant-based, plant-rich, or plant-forward diets. Ref: @projectdrawdown.bsky.social drawdown.org/explorer/red...

I agree that the "lack of a deeply felt sense of community" is one of the "central unsolved problems". I've been vegan for over 31 years, and I've never felt even the slightest sense of being part of a community. Some of that is due to my introversion, but not all of it. bsky.app/profile/xoii...

Does this consider the differences in efficiency between renewables and fossil fuels, in terms of primary energy and rejected energy that results in useful energy? Although the focus is currently on data centers, all of these renewables could still lower overall emissions. bsky.app/profile/xoii...
This is a Sankey Diagram showing: "The 2024 energy flow chart released by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory details the sources of energy production, how Americans are using energy and how much waste exists."

What is particularly of note, is the differences in efficiency between renewables and fossil fuels in terms of primary energy and rejected energy, that result in useful energy.

While I can appreciate the pragmatism of attempting to find allies in the animal agriculture industry, I think it's a mistake to suggest so many times in the book that land spared by a just transition to plant-based diets and alternative proteins, could be used for grazing. bsky.app/profile/geor...
