We're not racing towards the ever-moving goalposts of "AGI, because today's models have long since crossed the threshold of intelligence needed for creating massive economic value. They know an enormous amount, reason across domains, and do things that looked impossible a few years ago.
Yet after years and trillions of dollars invested in the industry, most software still isn't meaningfully intelligent, and life is mostly the same for the average person. That should tell us something: the bottleneck isn't raw intelligence. It's that today's intelligence is hard to build on.Current Al is trained to be a helpful, articulate, pleasant assistant. 4 Reasonable goals if you assume a human is on the other side of the model. Yet the foreseeable consequence is Al that requires humans in the loop instead of running in the background.
Software has never worked that way. Even the most complex software is built out of simple logic and layered abstractions, with every branch auditable. We want Al to work alongside existing software as a primitive that any programmer can invoke for semantic judgement and decisions, while still using code for what it's best at: exact computation.

I mean, we are starting from very different places, but you could write a very similar diagnosis for most Western economies. "Just give people more money and improve public services", undefeated policy recommendation.
The logical response to the dual economy's structural problems is well understood. It requires a comprehensive shift in the distribution of economic rewards from the state and corporate sector to households: a functioning welfare state that reduces precautionary savings, a stronger social safety net including healthcare, education and unemployment benefits, and wage growth that keeps pace with productivity.

Two years later, it seems that the greatest of these challenges is still the political one. Paradoxically, the relative irreversibility of aspects of the Green New Deal, such as the decarbonisation of the electricity mix, seems much more assured by cheapening renewables, and their spectacular technological development, than by our ability to defend the programme. Curiously, as environmentalists who have always emphasised the political rather than technical nature of the ecological transition, we have been more reassured by certain market achievements, technological development, or China’s climate commitments, than by our own political strength, where we have been more modest than we should be.
