Significant rainfall and "numerous flash floods" are expected this week. The suite of MRMS hydrology products provides ELITE visualizations for scenarios like this. MRMS --> Hydrology --> Streamflow: CREST

There are 4 Moderate Flooding Risks this week, but not all flooding is created equal. TODAY-TUE: Wet ground can't handle more water - it's already saturated. WED-THU: Dry ground can't absorb water - it's hard as a rock. Different root causes, but both could lead to significant flooding impacts!

The Nor'easter has developed quite a swirl! Water vapor imagery illustrates the dry air (yellow) wrapping all the way around the central circulation and being pulled into the backside of the storm.

There's something surreal about a satellite image like this. Mostly sunny skies over Hawaii don't adequately capture the dangerous wind & waves on the ground. Yet, the sprawling major hurricane centered 300 miles off the the coast of the Big Island is a vivid reminder of Mother Nature's power.

Super Typhoon Surigae is about halfway between Okinawa and the Diato islands. The core of Surigae is expected to stay ~200 miles SE of Tokyo as it moves NE over the next few days. Kitadaito Airport is gusting to 59 mph, which is quite impressive given that it's 75 miles away from the eyewall!

For the first time since 4/20… There are no SPC severe weather risk areas across the US today. 🚫⛈️ A sure sign of Fall. 🍂

Excessive or Impressive? 🤔 We're using quad-pane to track Surigae, Nolo, Odalys, Polo, and the Nor'Easter all at the same time tonight! 🌀🌧💨🌊

🌧A TROPICAL CONNECTION🌀 There's a Flash Flood Emergency in Mora, NM & a powerful hurricane off the south coast of Mexico. Despite being nearly 1500 miles apart, they're both fueled by the same plume of anomalous tropical moisture.

"...the SHIPS rapid intensification index is showing percentages as high as I have ever seen them." Very noteworthy discussion about TS Polo this morning from NHC's @ericblake12.bsky.social. We're about to see what happens when you put a tropical cyclone in nearly ideal conditions for growth.

@wxfront.bsky.social continues to impress! This is an example of their five-panel view of Typhoon Dujuan. This typhoon may have a downstream effect on our weather here in the PNW, so it's worth talking about! #weatherfront

Tornadoes CAN happen in the mountains! 🌪️⛰️ NWS Salt Lake City confirmed a tornado Friday afternoon just east of Fruit Heights, Utah. Although tornadoes don’t OFTEN form in the mountains, this is a great reminder that they can (and do) form in steep terrain.

DID YOU KNOW? Most of the time, NWS Advisories are issued by county. But that's not always the case. 🚫 For heat and snowfall products in the western US, TERRAIN plays a big role. ⛰️ The Heat Advisories in California today fill every valley, resulting in JAGGED outlines! 🥵

Watch the European Ensemble shift east with Lowell's track over the last 11 runs. 😬 The centerline is now nearly 150 miles east of what was forecast 72 hours ago. The result: more significant impacts for Kaua'i and Ni'ihau.

If you just look at radar reflectivity tonight in Central PA, you might think it's raining everywhere. 🚫 This is where Correlation Coefficient comes in handy! High values (maroon) indicate locations with rain 🌧, while greens, blues, and grays show biological scatterers (bugs 🪲)!

Viewing conditions are remarkably good for tonight's lunar eclipse across much of the country! 🌕 Purple = clear skies. Red/yellow = cloudy. To the millions who are being eclipsed by thunderstorms along the East Coast tonight - at least it's not a solar eclipse. Those are WAY cooler.
