A significant amount of rain is on the way for the central U.S., with 3-5+ inches expected for many areas currently experiencing drought. While it'll be beneficial to an extent, this much rain falling all at once on arid ground is a recipe for flooding.

Hurricanes are warm-core lows powered by thunderstorm activity around the center of the storm. This nor'easter is a cold-core low mostly powered by upper-level winds. Lows exist on a spectrum that sometimes makes them hard to fit neatly into one box. This is close to being one of those storms.

That's a fantastic question! I don't know of one off-hand other than actually measuring distance on satellite imagery. Cloud distance can be super deceptive--thunderstorms can be visible from a hundred+ miles away.
