another old trick for cool scifi vibes is to use Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis House. the tile work is iconic, and you can see the house used as Deckard's apartment in Blade Runner or you could do what Babylon 5 did, and make glowing plastic tile recreations for columns!

A pulsewidth, or duty cycle, is simply the width of a pulse wave, as in the amount of time it spends high versus low. This is expressed as a ratio, often as a percentage.

It can be automatically changed back and forth, known as pulsewidth modulation. This is usually accomplished with an LFO.

A pulse wave with a pulsewidth of 50% is more specifically a square wave.

The principle of making the first half of each cycle longer or shorter than the second half can also be applied to other periodic waveforms, but it usually isn't, in order to simplify the design of the oscillator.

The VCS3 sports one of the very few types of analogue oscillators to seamlessly transition between sawtooth and triangle waves in this manner, as does the A-100's A-146 LFO. In the digital realm, it's the basis of PD synthesis, Casio's short-lived rival to Yamaha's FM synthesis. This is exemplified in the CZ-101.

You know what was a good metaphor-based user interface? In Theme Park, you as the manager had to negotiate. You do this by extending (pay more) and contracting (pay less) your arm like they're doing, until the two arms meet for a handshake. You have to do this before the pile of biscuits runs out.

On iron gall ink: notebook.zoeblade.com/Iron_gall_in...

Iron gall ink was a popular writing ink from antiquity until the nineteenth century. Unlike the surface-level carbon ink, it burns into the page, as per the Ancient Greek word ἔγκαυστον, suggesting that it may well be the origin of the word "ink".

As its name implies, it's made from iron salts combined with tannic acid from crushed oak galls (or, if you prefer, crushed hawthorn bark), along with gum arabic as a binder.

When you write with iron gall ink, it initially looks dark blue. (This is presumably the reason that dark blue writing ink is still considered professional, while any other hues are not.) Over the next few days, as the iron oxidises, the ink turns black. Over the next few centuries, it turns brown, coincidentally somewhat reminiscent of Sepia ink.

It's relatively easy to make, and text written in it can remain perfectly legible for centuries, making it a popular choice for scribes, artists, and natural philosophers alike.

There are several recipes available. Pseudonymous monk Theophilus mixed his with wine for a longer shelf life. Later, Newton mixed his with strong beer. It seems mould is adverse to alcohol.

Although iron gall ink can last for centuries, it corrodes both metal and eventually paper, so is best used with a quill. You might possibly get away with very hastily cleaning a dip pen after each use, but a fountain pen is right out.

The modern equivalent is archival registrar's ink, as used to record "hatches, matches, and dispatches" (births, weddings, and deaths).
