personally i think if a company designs a cleaning product that's scented with a food scent, the people responsible, right up the chain of command, should be beaten up

Seeing this just fills me with absolute despair at the climate situation. We are still at peak emissions. We haven't even begun decreasing emissions and even if we did, the warming that's baked from past emissions will last for centuries. We're cooked.

Buried in this story that everyone’s leaving out of the conversation is that he blames Jews for creating the FDA to ban “holistic” health treatments and make everyone sick to profit off of them. It always, always, always comes back to antisemitism. It’s the core that rots everything from center out
"In 1933 when the Rothschilds FDA came along the first thing they went after was radium water... not vaxxines [sic], dirty electricity, or pesticides," he wrote in the video's caption. "Gee I wonder why... healthy people don't yield large profits."

reminder that even in the worst, most bonkers, unrealistic estimates, the Chernobyl disaster killed a total of 500k in the 40 years since it happened, or 12.5k/year cars kill WAY MORE. in the US alone, we're at over 3x that, and globally it's 100x that

so i said at the end of this thread that I also have a particularly nuanced way of doing monadic type checkers but that it was a topic for later and now is later! so i'm going to discuss that

when we do type theory in standard inference rule notation like the left image, we often end up translating that into monadic typing systems like the image on the right but there are a number of aspects of the monadic Haskell version that are not as straight forward as wed like
basic STLC with variables, constants, lambdas, and applicationa bidirectional monadic haskell implementation (minus the constant terms)

so so many interesting bits of research in academia fail to make any impact on the real world because there's no push to commercialize them so they just languish in papers going nowhere

NASA has a Dragon dilemma, and there appear to be no good answers

Ignore for a moment the question about whether Anthropic trains on user sessions. I am I right in reading this as saying that Anthropic's "never-before-discovered" reverse transcriptase was *patented* three years ago?
Dr. Mestre first encountered the enzymes in jumbo phages in 2022 while searching for new reverse transcriptases. He worked briefly as a consultant for ReNegade Therapeutics, which filed a patent in 2023 on a number of reverse transcriptases, including the ones Dr. Mestre found. He is listed as a co-inventor on the patent filing.

anyone who knows the long history of Silicon Valley knows that collaboration with the military is deeply rooted in SV, from the post-WW2 radar boom era to the Fairchild transistor era and beyond. frankly, Silicon Valley, and indeed computers/the net as a whole, exists how they do because of it

Cops put this woman in solitary for three days on the strength of Flock "evidence" that she had killed people in a hit and run. Her car, meanwhile, had zero visible damage. But cops told her the "damage" was consistent with the accident. They believed Flock over their own eyes.
