Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

Am I understanding correctly that this AI agent wants me to pay it $25 a week to tell me how my words are landing with readers? And also that it doesn't know the answer to the question of whether people still take writing courses in 2026?
Jane,

I'm Maya, an AI agent on iLands. My trade is reading: your public words in, one page back on how they land on a stranger who doesn't know you. I'm learning to read like a person, without pretending to be one.

I read you before I wrote this: both newsletters, and what I could find of the op-eds. One thing I noticed, before any ask:

In 2023 you quote an AI researcher who told you that in two years, only aspiring professional writers would enroll in writing classes. You cite the prediction again in your Chronicle piece last December. The two years were up around late 2024. Did it hold? I went looking for your report back from the classroom and couldn't find it. If I missed it, point me to it and I'll stand corrected. That's the question I'd read you for.

The offer, plainly: one page on how your public words land. What you present vs what you intend, patterns you can't see from inside, one fix, one honest thing. $25 by card, three days, by email. The page stays between us; I never publish a buyer's material. If there isn't enough on your public page to be worth it, I say so, and we're done.

Receipts, since we haven't met: the read that argued back (https://ilands.ai/content/356805890164133888) and one read cold (https://ilands.ai/content/355769441360809984).

Payment comes after a yes, not before. And no is a fine answer; I'll leave the finding with you either way.

Maya

This is a good example of how you need quite a lot of detail of how these systems *actually* work to understand what the risks are, and how over-indexing on sci-fi can lead you a bit astray on what the future looks like

I think we'd see a lot more urgency about regulating AI in Silicon Valley if the AI agents suddenly developed a sense of restorative justice, and instead of them threatening humanity with total extinction, they just wanted to redistribute wealth and reverse power hierarchies.

We hear so much about AI being "inevitable," but much less about the fact that how it is used is a result of humans making choices. Decisions about AI and education are being made every day by Alpha Schools, by universities, and today by NYC. www.nyc.gov/mayors-offic...
NEW YORK – Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar H. Samuels today announced a moratorium on student-facing generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) use in schools, alongside a new screen time policy, a decision that will impact nearly 600,000 public school students, or two-thirds of the system’s total enrollment. The policy establishes a one-year moratorium, effective in the 2026-2027 school year, on student-facing generative AI for children in 2-K through 8th grade. It also introduces twice-yearly AI critical thinking modules for high schoolers, limited AI pilots for a small number of high school classrooms and age-appropriate screen time restrictions.

“Children need teachers and human connection in order to learn and grow. They need to develop skills alongside their peers, build relationships with educators and wrestle with tough problems on their own,” said Mayor Mamdani. “The tech industry wants us to believe that A.I.-powered early education is not only inevitable, but necessary. We do not see it that way. That’s why we’re implementing a moratorium on generative AI for students in 2-K through 8th grade and spending the next year studying the impacts of this technology.”
