An immense thank you to the 2026 Berton House Writers’ Residency jury, local author Louise Dumayne and past writers-in-residence Gord Grisenthwaite, and Manjushree Thapa, for their time and dedication in selecting our 2026 writers-in-residence. writerstrust.com/BertonHouse #WT50
Berton Hour Writers' Residency, 2026 Jury: Louise Dumayne, Gord Grisenthwaite, Manjushree Thapa.Berton Hour Writers' Residency, 2026 Jury: Louise Dumayne is a fiction writer based in the Yukon wilderness. She has finished a thriller manuscript and is working on a second with a supernatural element. She was an actor in London for over fifteen years before moving to Alaska to work with sled dogs. Her work draws on her granular knowledge of a unique bush lifestyle, the caring but claustrophobic culture of remote communities, and the eccentric characters drawn to the far north. She won the Lush Triumphant Short Fiction Award in 2021. Dumayne lives off road, off grid in a cabin in the woods with her husband and a retired sled dog.Berton Hour Writers' Residency, 2026 Jury: Gord Grisenthwaite worked as a graphic designer before completing his MA in English literature and creative writing from the University of Windsor. His short fiction and poetry have appeared in publications like The Antigonish Review and PRISM international. His short story, “The Fine Art of Frying Eggs,” won the John Kenneth Galbraith Literary Award in 2013. In 2021, Grisenthwaite’s “Splatter Patterns” was shortlisted for the CBC Short Story Prize and his debut novel, Home Waltz, was shortlisted for a Governor General’s Literary Award. Grisenthwaite is from Lytton First Nation and lives in Kingsville, Ontario.Berton Hour Writers' Residency, 2026 Jury: Manjushree Thapa is the author of eight books of literary fiction and nonfiction. She has also translated Nepali literature into English. Her nonfiction book Forget Kathmandu was a finalist in the Lettre Ulysses Award. She has won the Canada Council for the Arts’ Joseph S Stauffer Prize in Literature and the Pen/HEIM Translation Fund, and numerous grants and writing residencies worldwide.
