Mechanics are an under explored front in the war on cars (The meeple from car park capital (good game!) is only there for alt text reasons)
Your hate comes from aesthetics and personal biases. Your hate comes from the abstract. You see a guy in a jacked up truck and hate him because he listens to some dumb shit Kill Tony and pop country instead of The Dig and some terrible noise band. You hate cars because you read the statistics on their effect on the environment. You hate cars because a guy cut you off on your bicycle. You hate cars as a societal concept and social signifier.

You don't understand what it truly fucking means to hate an automobile. To look at every single shit designed function, to see literally under the hood and awe at the utter waste and depravity of their modern design. To see specifically where and how the manufacturer decided to cut a corner, save a dime, and make a dollar selling parts. To see the tons of cheap plastic, cheaper and cheaper connectors, the waste — the waste the waste the fucking waste. The waste of energy. The design by committee CAFE regulated bean counted fucking garbage that eeks out some statistically insignificant improvement in fuel mileage of a sedan so the fucking 2500 trucks can gain another 50 pounds in screens and plastics.

You don't know what it's like to replace lifters and cams, mechanisms that have been fundamental to the operation of any internal combustion engine since their creation, because of the apple sauce thin fucking oil the manufacturers recommend now and the cheaper and cheaper metallurgy they use to pump out this absolute junk garbage dog shit.(From prev) You cannot fucking comprehend how many thousands of pounds of plastic l, just me personally have personally seen destroyed, cracked, broken, wasted, sent back to the earth to poison it forever to replace some cheap fucking design. To replace cheap plastic with cheap plastic. Watching literal petroleum deteriorate into your hands, probably into my fucking lungs and blood stream too through every little gash and cut on my fucking hands working on these absolute steaming shit piles. It's like they are shooting a big cancer gun at the road, at the water, at the soil, and at every poor bastard who has to contort himself in some horrific way to to diagnose and fix some dogshit design that got some middle manager the fucking corner office and $50,000 bonus that year. (The image is the thumbs up pose the NPCs do in Car Park Capital.)You cannot even imagine how many gallons of fuel have burned just for me, one single fucking mechanic, by delivery drivers to the shop delivering parts. Of how much waste of plastic and diagnostics
But, you might say, come on dude that's just a q37, those aren't even bad to work on. BY MODERN STANDARDS no this isn't even that bad. This horrific monstrosity of engine packaging pales in comparison to the type of shit they are cooking up in 2026 at Mechanic Torture and Earth Poison Industries.

And it's only getting worse. Wet belts, no dipsticks anywhere on 10k recommended oil change intervals that stress already shitty weak lifter designs. I cannot even put into words how depraved and grotesque it is. The marvels of human engineering, advanced in metallurgy and plastics, in bearing designs and hydraulics, all to be absolutely thrown by the wayside for planned to fail designed to destroy $50,000 ubrepairable (sic) unserviceable unsustainable garbage.

Waymo is not a last-mile solution, nor a transit solution. And most certainly should not benefit from any of the transit funding we won in fighting for NITA. It is a car-centric proposal that offers no real systems change, shares all the same geometry, capacity, and environmental ills of cars.

@ilstaterepbuckner.bsky.social however much Google is paying you, it's too little. Chicago already has a last-mile solution in Divvy, and NITA is supposed to build TOD in the burbs. We don't need Waymo.

US freight rail carries the most in the world by tonnage because it's unprofitable to truck gravel. US freight rail carries very little when normalized to the value of the freight.
020 2
trinket ✶ @wrennifer.on.bike · 03/10/2026
What an ahistorical take. The interstate highway system was a massive public subsidy of the trucking industry that the freight railroads couldn't match, so a lot of goods moved to trucking. If the public subsidy stops, everything goes back to rail.

Or you could opt out of all of that by building housing with no parking, removing street parking, and expanding and improving the transit system, cycling infrastructure, and pedestrian space.

trinket ✶ @wrennifer.on.bike · 03/10/2026
Yep, EVs don't have tailpipe emissions. Now you just have the embodied emissions of car-centric infrastructure, increased wear and tear on roads due to increased weight, the emissions of the electricity generation (including the expansion of green energy), and the unchanged pedestrian fatality rate.

The second best time, now that we've almost decimated the oil infrastructure required to build car infrastructure (EVs and ICE cars!), is today.

trinket ✶ @wrennifer.on.bike · 02/10/2026
The car ownership rate is a response to the political climate of subsidies for cars, a political climate that is crumbling. The best time to have built transit, cycling and pedestrian oriented housing and infrastructure was not tearing it all down for "urban renewal" 50-100 years ago.
100 1
trinket ✶ @wrennifer.on.bike · 02/10/2026
Far cheaper to zone and build housing with the requisite amenities close by, and not include the parking or charging infrastructure. Transit & cycling can fill most of the demand for cars, with delivery services filling the demand for items that require a car to transport.
130 3
trinket ✶ @wrennifer.on.bike · 02/10/2026
Building housing with the assumption that the residents will drive necessitates building parking, which drives up the cost of housing. EVs perpetuate this assumption, and adds the cost of the charging infrastructure, which can be substantial in urban areas where grid upgrades are expensive.

My broader point with my opposition to Waymos is that even if they are individually "safer than a human driver," they will entrench all negatives of car-prioritized society to a degree that is harder to deal with and causes more harm in the long run vs non-Waymo urbanism.

If the larger society imposes costs on me as a Chicago taxpayer, I am well within my right to recoup those costs, negative externalities included. Drivers from out of town impose costs and externalities in excess of how much they pay to the city, so an increase in price is natural.

trinket ✶ @wrennifer.on.bike · 02/10/2026
Nah, the entitlement is expecting me (as a resident of the place you're driving to) to set aside a portion of the roadway (that I pay for with my taxes) for your private use at whatever rate you think is "fair". Roadways that then cannot be used for better transit infrastructure, bike lanes, etc.

This was my main argument at the community meeting for Redefine the Drive, and I emphatically pushed back on the idea that people driving through Chicago have the right decide the infrastructure of the city. Cities should belong to the people that live there.

Cities rolled over for the introduction of the automobile, enclosing the commons of the street for the exclusive use by cars, even as the roads became the domain of those who live outside the city. So too is housing, and it's nice to see NYC fighting back.
