UK folks. When temps drop - don't let them normalise this. This happened in BC, Canada. A whole town burned up. Hundreds died in metro Vancouver in the heat. No big policy shifts after the fact, just more plans to extract fossil fuels and build inappropriate housing (concrete towers, more roads etc)

There's enough info on the internet for everyone to read, learn and understand logical fallacies. This is one. Its called "Whataboutism" or tu quoque. Just stop. Read up on them all and implement them in your commenting. Because this is tired, lazy at best and propagandist at worst.

My 89 year old Dad collapsed in the heat at home. Severly dehydrated - this could kill him. Not to mention children, babies, other vulnerable ppl. And birds, wildlife, pets, livestock, crops! This needs to be the moment.

I think this is the summer that changes everything. I'm sorry to say it's because predominately white Europe is finally seeing the climate crisis writ large. No more fossil fuel extraction. We MUST pivot HARD into renewables and prepare the world for what is here. Oh and lock them up.

I hear from a reliable source that a solar farm in Cornwall is currently offline because the UK's electricity grid infrastructure cannot take the extra - free - power at present. The UK is wasting an abundance of sunshine. Do better. (Same for Ireland and everywhere else.)

When scientists say climate change means average temperatures will rise by 2 or 3 degrees, they don't mean that what was once a 20C summer's day becomes 22C. Weather will yo-yo ever more wildly: one week will bring cold and storms, the next a blistering drought. That's the harsh future.

Yeah, my criticism was mostly about the NYT holding up Vancouver as a bastian of excellent housing solutions. Thats not what this is. Although, land back, indigenous communities making money, of course. We should pay reparations, and provide clean water for communities across Canada.

I do think that. Govt builds 800sq feet or less condos, ppl move in - no rent. Just maintenance fees. How do we afford it? We tax the wealthiest. Ppl with more money in their pockets would be a huge boon to economies, health and wellbeing. What are we even doing?

In Vancouver supply did need to increase, but there is now an oversupply of condos and the problem is prices to buy are not reducing. Turns out no one wants to sell at a loss. It needs policy to force landlords to sell, like property taxes for multiple ownership etc. Lots of methods, none used.
