Our office is closed for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and to allow staff to commemorate. We encourage our community to mark this day with us, to show their support for Indigenous peoples harmed by the legacy of residential schools, and to remember the children who never came home.

This is unimaginably devastating. We hope the parents are being supported by their employers. Workers are entitled to at least 3 days unpaid leave for bereavement without the risk of losing their job, but employers can offer more time off and can pay their employees during the leave to support them.

Q&A: Employment Insurance
Q: If I apply for EI sickness benefits, do I have to quit my job?
A: No. In Alberta, eligible workers can take up 27 weeks off work for medical reasons. In most cases, you cannot be terminated for taking time off to recover or heal from illness or injury, including a physical or mental health condition.

If you have applied for EI sickness benefits, you should not quit your job.
