Q&A: Employment Insurance
Q: If I apply for EI sickness benefits, do I have to quit my job?
A: No. In Alberta, eligible workers can take up 27 weeks off work for medical reasons. In most cases, you cannot be terminated for taking time off to recover or heal from illness or injury, including a physical or mental health condition.

If you have applied for EI sickness benefits, you should not quit your job.

Last week, our ED Carolyn was in Ottawa at the Commissioner for Workers Forum. We are very appreciative of the Hon. @stevenmackinnon.bsky.social, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development & Labour and Commissioner Pierre Laliberté for consulting us on the national #EmploymentInsurance program.
Photo of a spot at a boardroom table with a microphone and headsets with a name card beside it that reads: Carolyn Krahn, Executive Director, Workers' Resource Centre. There is a thick book titled "Employment Insurance Monitoring and Assessment Report" and a binder titled Commissioner for Workers 2025 Forum. A name tag with Carolyn Krahn written on it is laid overtop the report and binder.
