Ghosts Over Maine by Grace Massey
Editor's Note: This poem is a masterclass in how to say the most achingly important thing with lyrical subtlety.

According to my husband I definitely channel domestic goddess vibes, but it's less Nigella Lawson and more goddess of PRIMAL CHAOS.

Autobiography of Death by Kim Hyesoon trans. Don Mee Choi.. Mind-blowing and gut-wrenching. On the second read through I'm realising also stubbornly resists sense. A Korean Book of the Dead. A shamanic voice that lifts away from the personal into the collective, surreal, nightmare-state. Incredible.
A copy of Autobiography of Death by Kim Hyesoon is balanced on my maroon-legginged knees. The front cover reads: /wear a coat woven with water's hair/ a I crouch and cover my face// let's be slant together/ after I jump off/ it'll be your turn to jump... Translated by Don Mee Choi

Ancient Algorithms by Katrine Øgaard Jensen et al., by @sarabandebooks.bsky.social . A handbook and exemplar of creative "mis"translation: sometimes the "rules" used to translate are as creative as the poems themselves: "...cut away everything...that doesn't sound metal."
Ancient Algorithms by Katrine Øgaard Jensen with others including Ursula Andkjær Olsen, Sawako Nakayasu, Aditi Machado, Paul Cunningham, Baba Badji and CAConrad... a green paperback on a bedside table next to a small ceramic dish. My bare foot in the background

Reading After Image by Jenny George published by @coppercanyonpress.bsky.social. On loss, grief, death, love, and hence the underworld. Moves effortlessly between nature, philosophy, emotion: "Now the birds are our marriage./ I put the seeds out/ every morning/ on a white plate."
A copy of After Image by Jenny George on a floral bed cover. The book cover has a Rothko-esque image by artist Yamamoto Masao, featuring two numinous black areas almost touching, with what looks like a sea or lake in between them, and some small figures and maybe a ship or island.

Reading Plastic by @matthew-rice.bsky.social on our road trip. Reads like a novel - it has characters so real they jump off the page. Why is it so innovative to write about one's work? Revolutionary to write about plastic beads and latches, and the slow death of a night shift? But it is.
A copy of Plastic by Matthew Rice held up against the dash of a car. Ahead is the open road and a hot, dry open landscape

Shopping for books to take on holiday. Considerations: does the poetry surprise / delight me? Is the book less than a tenner? Is there a gender balance? Are there enough poems /words in the book 0to make it worth the outlay? Will it fit in my suitcase?
A stack of books on a cafe table. Includes 6 poetry books and one fiction book: The Safekeep by Yael Van Der Wouden

Savouring this.... Midden Witch by Fiona Benson. It's the POV shift that makes the witch poems so original: from the viewpoint of the villagers persecuting the witches, the violence takes on a brutal enthusiasm, bringing body to the forefront and somehow evoking deeper tenderness.
A copy of Midden Witch by Fiona Benson. Black cover hosts a swollen bottle of something resembling worms writhing within its glowing fluid interior

Spent half of last night finishing "Half of a Yellow Sun" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. My face wet with tears, heart physically hurting. I haven't read a book that came close to it since "Birdsong" by Sebastian Faulks. The horror of war is warmed by so much humanity that you can't be numb. Masterful

Special needs teacher. People ask: "You must have to deal with some really difficult parents?" Somehow that always gets to me. Those parents go through a lot to end up being judged as being at fault for their children's needs!!

Didn't know that there may have been a pre-Christian belief in a "chthonic otherworld"... this book "Twilight of the Godlings" a fascinating cauldron of information @drfrancisyoung.bsky.social
A hardback copy of Twilight of the Godlings: The Shadowy Beginnings of Britain's Supernatural Beings by Francis Young. The cover has a faint picture of a woman's face with ringlets, a long flowing gown, and a kind of foliage crowning and surrounding her head: it is perhaps part of a stone sculpture. I am holding the book in the dentist's waiting room.

Reading @victoriachang.bsky.social in the small hours, soaking it up. Maybe if I soak it up I could write like this. Poems that make you say "oh my god". & tell such truthful lies. "I have cut eight lines off this poem for no/ other reason except that they were lies. Perhaps all lines/ are lies."
A page showing an illustration from Victoria Chang's book "with my back to the world". It shows a faintly printed poem which has been scribbled on with rounded fake writing using a calligraphy pen. The scribble has lines and a title. Above the book in the picture are two charging cables which cross each other.

Reading (for the second time) @victoriachang.bsky.social 's "With My Back to the World". I love the way these poems inhabit the artworks they describe. But I also love the moments of distance: "I realized that I needed to/ return on a day when I too could rope off my sadness."
A hardback copy of Victoria Chang's "With My Back to the World" sits on my knees and is propped up by the little table in front of my seat on the train. Also on the table: a brown bag with the remains of my dinner, and a glass water bottle.
