First day of “art studio on the patio” season! My favorite place to sit and work on rug hooking.
A work in progress is showing fiber art of two pied-billed grebes. Beyond the art you can see trees and spring color, plus a blue sky with white clouds. Technique is rug hooking, hand-dyed and as-is wool on linen.

I made this textile last year for my sister. Her partner just finished the bench and upholstery work. It is great to see it all together! #fiberart #functionalart
A wooden bench with hooked fiber art upholstered to the sides and top. The fiber art depicts a sperm whale swimming through blue waves, with air bubbles rising above. The fiber art is wool on linen, using rug hooking and quillie techniques.

Experimenting with painting wool fabric using Inktense for application in an upcoming project. Need to refine a bit, but I think this will give me what I’m going for. #inktense #paintingwool
A piece of white wool fabric with a variety of fuchsia and shiraz painting swatches showing different values. Also shown are two Inktense pencils and three brushes — a scrubber, a water brush and an angled brush.

Artist date to the Phillips Museum of Art at F&M to see Sue Reno’s beautiful work inspired by the Susquehanna River. It was great to take in all of the detail in her techniques, design and materials. The current exhibits are there through Apr. 24. #fiberartistdate #fiberartinspiration

I’m a self-taught artist and books are part of my “curriculum”. I’m away from my studio for a few days, but I’m making good use of my time in a family lounge at Penn with these books plus my journal. #selftaughtartist #womensworkart #fiberartist
Photo shows the covers of 2 books, Eyes Open to the World by Karen Miller under the book Unravelling Women’s Art by P. L. Henderson. Both books have bookmarks poking out of the top. The book on top, Unravelling Women’s Art, shows a female head and shoulders (no clothes).
The woman’s head is wrapped in white string with some hair and facial features showing through. In front of her mouth is a large mess of thread so you can’t see her mouth at all. The image is by Alia Ali.

Whimsical linden tree seed pods depicted in multimedia fiber art — pin loom weaving, hooking, embroidery. #fiberart #pinloomweaving #rughooking #art
Rectangular fiber art of a hand-woven background fabric in green, red-violet, and yellow-orange variegated wool yarn with hooked and embroidered motif of two linden tree seed pods in off white colors. The border is chain-stitched in the same yarn as the weaving. The dried seed pods are laying beside the fiber art.

Seriously, creative folks: Don't be afraid to let people know your stuff is out there for them, or worry that "now is not the time for that." People are stressed and freaked out and looking for the things that will give them a moment of rest and joy. It is EXACTLY the time for what we do. Tell them.

My first piece of pottery! Went to date night at Lititz Clay Studio last month — highly recommend. It was a lot of fun! And harder than it looks 😂

I tried Rachelle LeBlanc’s gallery finish on this piece and I’m very happy with how this turned out. The tonal wool yarn was perfect for the row of chain stitch between the loops and binding. Visit the shop on her website for a video tutorial on this finish. #fiberart #finishingtechnique
Close up photo showing the edge of a piece of hooked art. There is a row of chain stitch in a green blue tonal yarn between the green and light peach hooked loops of the work and the taupe binding tape stitched to the back of the work.

Artist date yesterday at the Barnes Foundation. Philly has great museums and this is one of the best. I highly recommend it — and do the tour to learn not only about the collection but also Dr. Barnes’ interesting story. #artistdate

A kid on my bball team was having a rough time, so I sat down with him and listened and made him feel heard and took time to lift him up in a genuine way... and I am telling you, this is how you get through the next 4 years. Human by human.

I’m ready to start the finishing on this piece. Did you know that barn swallows eat almost exclusively on the wing?

I’m a fiber artist, but I dabble with other mediums. This year I’m keeping a nature observation visual journal as part of my creative practice. Winter week 3 is for winterberries.

After reading Margaret Renkl’s book The Comfort of Crows, I was inspired to add a weekly nature observation to my journaling practice. Fall week 9 was all about a FOTS white-throated sparrow I watched on a morning walk. Highly recommend this practice!

Today’s poem celebrates Fibonacci Day. It’s called ‘Word Crunching’.
Word Crunching

I
wrote
a poem
on a page
but then each line grew
to the word sum of the previous two
until I began to worry about all these words coming with such frequency
because as you can see, it can be easy to run out of space when a poem gets all Fibonacci sequency

I can’t decide what I like best in this view from my walk this morning — the blue sky, the warm sunlight on the tree trunks or the features of the split rail fence exaggerated in the shadows on the path. No, it is definitely those shadows!
