There's this stupid cultural impulse in the US to "keep politics out of [Insert Every Important Aspect of Amercian Life]".
That somehow, Politics is this gross, messy, rude topic that's gauche to bring up to anybody EVER. If you bring up politics to the wrong person, they'll react like you discussing the tectonically impactful movement of government is as gross as talking in detail about the color, texture and smell of your latest bowel movement.
And there's nowhere in US life we're really encouraged to bring it up. For those of you NOT IN THE US, any sphere of public and private life is treated as off limits to political discussion. If you subscribe to the framing of 20th and 21st century American niceties, you're not supposed to talk about it (deep inhale):
- at the dinner table with your family
- with your kids
- with your parents
- with your grandparents
- with your aunts or uncles
- at any moment with the family, in general
- while youre socializing with your friends
- while you're dating
- when you're in committed relationships
- with your coworkers at the Job
- with your boss at the Job
- with your subordinates at the Job
- in public spaces
