I spoke to a mayoral candidate in our city yesterday about how the poor state of sidewalks impacts disabled people's ability to live their lives. This is my soapbox, too, as it makes accessibility tangible - crumbling or shifting concrete, no curb cut, blocked with poles or merchandise = no access.

Soapbox moment: sidewalks matter. Like, a lot. Even in Vancouver, we have a long way to go to upgrade sidewalks so everyone can get around. @womentcities.bsky.social's Our City Hall campaign rules and you should read their stuff. Here's a highlight: www.womentransformingcities.org/ourcityhall
"I use a mobility scooter and a lot of
the city's sidewalks have huge
cracks where the roots of trees are
coming up out of the concrete. I
have to turn around and try to find
an alternative route… Not every
sidewalk has a curb cut, so I have to
drive my scooter on the road."

We launched the Our City Hall Pledge: we’re calling on mayor and council candidates to commit to action on 6 priorities, shaped by your voices, if elected! We've sent the Our City Hall Pledge to major parties. We hope mayor and council candidates will commit to action on these critical priorities.
6 policy icon illustrations of the Our City Hall Pledge: keys, a person using a walker leaving a bus, two people dancing under a disco ball, brown paper bag of groceries, clea toilet with a broom, and a ribbon to signify gender safety. The 6 policy asks in the Our City Hall Pledge are listed, alongside the fact that over 70 organizations have endorsed one or more of the policy asks.
