So we are warring with Iran And Russia is supplying weaponry to Iran. And we are paying Russia to send us diesel fuel. Because we are warring with Iran the ships with the diesel can't get to us. So we are buying it from Russia, which... Yeah, this is some three-dimensional chess right here.

Roger Marshall charged his patients 18% annual interest on their unpaid bills. His bakery bill for $678.75 was due six years ago. At 18% interest compounded annually, the total he'd owe would be at least $1,800. Marshall just paid the bakery $1,300—far less than what his patients would owe.

Prohibition was legal! Jim Crow was legal! Anti-abortion laws are (sadly) currently legal! Slavery was legal! Apartheid was legal! The War on Drugs is legal! Laws banning sodomy were (until 2003) legal! Of *course* "enforcing this nation's laws" can be controversial.

Mike Johnson might pretend to still be Speaker and act like he can refuse to seat members and some people might follow along and we'll have a crisis, sure. But this isn't like the still-VP certifying an election of someone else January 6 before they become not-VP at noon on January 20.

I don't understand why people talk about it this way. At noon on January 3, 2027, Mike Johnson is not Speaker, he is not even a Member of the House. No one is. 435 Member-elects show up and all have equal power and need to elect a Speaker to then get sworn in as actual Members.

Chat is it good when an Ambassadorial nominee writes "Stop papering all these things. It’s really dangerous ... if you write an email or a text about, l’m gonna kill you cause I love you but you’re so out of control" to the man who paid her $300,000 to help resolve his tax issues with the IRS?
That same month, Guilfoyle sent a congratulatory note to Long after his confirmation as IRS commissioner. She attached a letter Deters had written outlining his tax dispute: “Don Jr. and I are very close with Eric Deters and his wife and I know he sent you a letter,” she wrote. “I am hoping I know how busy you are that you could give some time and attention to it.”

Two days later, Deters sent her a photo of a printed memo addressed to her: “I have paid you $300,000 over the years,” he wrote. “As of this memo, I have not received one favor. I am not naive or a sucker. I need results.”

In response, she told Deters to “stop papering all these things. It’s really dangerous.”

“Just call me on signal,” she wrote.

As for Long, she would call him the next day, she assured Deters. “I wrote him a very nice message. Told him how important it was that you’re close to me and to don.”

“Also very privately,” she continued, “if you write an email or a text about, l’m gonna kill you cause I love you but you’re so out of control.”

That afternoon she texted an update: Long had written her back.

“BOOM,” she added.

A week later, on July 3, she placed two missed calls to Deters’ phone, and sent him instructions on how to wire money to an American Express account.

“Your needing $100,000 urgent unfortunately is not going to work,” he wrote. “I can’t do this without getting a divorce.”

“I’ve been calling you for over a week straight,” she replied. “You could be here meeting with Billy Long.”

Long is now the U.S. ambassador to Iceland. Embassy officials there referred reporters to a State Department media office that didn’t respond to a request for comment.

Ronald Reagan came to political prominence in CA with his opposition the Rumford Open Housing Act--"If an individual wants to discriminate against Negroes...it is his right to do so,"--opposed the Voting Rights Act, and called the Civil Rights Act "a bad piece of legislation."
"Reagan Walks out of Meet with Negroes"
Reagan said he agreed with the goals of the Civil Rights Act but said it "was a bad piece of legislation" and that he would not have voted for it had he been in Congress.

A customer just tried to use an employee discount code that ChatGPT gave her. I work at a high-end clothing store and clocked in to my manager telling me about the most unhinged interaction from yesterday. A woman walked in asking if she could use a 40% off code she got online. We don't have any sales running, so my manager looks at the screen and realizes ChatGPT straight up handed this woman a real employee's internal ID number.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

Side-by-side comparison of three social media posts announcing the death of former Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert at age 84. On the left, Fox News posts, “BREAKING: Dennis Hastert, longest-serving Republican House speaker, dead at 84,” above a photo of Hastert raising his hand at a microphone. In the center, CBS News posts, “Former Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, who represented Illinois for two decades in Congress and was later jailed for violating banking laws, has died,” above a photo of Hastert walking through the U.S. Capitol. On the right, MeidasTouch posts, “Dennis Hastert, the longest-serving Republican Speaker in history, has died at 84. Hastert admitted in federal court to sexually abusing boys he coached as a high school wrestling coach. A federal judge called him a ‘serial child molester.’ He was a registered sex offender.” The MeidasTouch post includes an image of Hastert speaking from the House floor with a C-SPAN chyron identifying him as Speaker of the House.

the other thing is that this is a totally incoherent and arbitrary standard for deciding who has rights and who doesn't. you could say the same, for instance, of alito's vision of inviolate "religious liberty" or expansive gun rights.
